TVS to Launch One New Scooter and 2 Updated Models This Year

South-heartthrob-cum-Bear-Grylls’-look-alike Mahesh Babu is the latest addition to the bandwagon of celebrities who have pitched their weight behind automaker TVS. At an elaborate event where J.S. Srinivasan, Vice-President of Sales of TVS. Motor Co. was present, Mahesh Babu was introduced as a brand ambassador. He is slated to begin his duties by promoting the Phoenix, a 125 cc offering from TVS.

Mahesh Babu seems to have his hands full in the coming months, as TVS is poised for a busy year ahead. Two upgraded models are about to hit the showrooms, and interestingly, a new 110 cc scooter is in the offing. This scooter is where we would like to dwell upon, as it had been sighted quite a few times of late. Our reporting on that scooter has been extensive, and in case you had missed it, you can check out the latest spyshots here.

The scooter appeared to be a beefed-up version as compared to TVS’s current offerings, and a 125 cc mill would have done justice to its portrayed image. However, TVS has probably disappointed here with a 110 cc engine being called upon to propel the new model forward. The only consolation that we are looking at from the situation is that TVS might equip this model with their newer transmission. TVS had claimed it to be more efficient as it was not your regular variomatic.

The scooter looked significantly different from the Wego, and had apparently bigger wheels. The rear portion of the scooter drew close comparisons with that of the Activa. It appeared as if TVS designers wanted to shoo away all the “puny” and “minuscule” tags that had become attached to the Wego. These new launches will help TVS gain a better grasp of the market in the coming months for sure.

That also takes us to the spyshot of the covered TVS Scooter we spotted a few months back (Pictured above). After these developments, it appears that it might be an updated version of Scooty Streak.

TVS acknowledges the fact that automobile sales have been uninspiring in this year so far, but they are optimistic of the charts soaring skywards. Currently, TVS manages to sell around 1.6 lakh two-wheelers per month, out of which about 55,000 are motorcycles. Scooters are not far behind, with about 35,000 being sold each month. Surprisingly, mopeds comprise the largest chunk of the Sales-Pie, at around 65,000-70,000 units per month.

It is, thus, not amusing that TVS is looking forward to a good monsoon. When the lands in the mofussils are not parched and the paddy fields sway lustily to the wind, people’s pockets run deeper and they make more purchases!!
