SCOOP: ‘TVS Ronin’ – Upcoming Motorcycle? Name Patented

TVS Ronin brand name has been patented by a TVS group company in India few days back. Is it the production name of Zeppelin or something else?

In what comes as a big update, Sundaram Clayton Limited has registered trademark for the name ‘TVS Ronin‘ in India. Sundaram Clayton is a TVS Group company and it applied for this trademark in February this year. The trademark has been granted on 11 May 2020.

Interestingly, the trademark is for the name ‘TVS Ronin’ and the same for ‘Ronin’ was objected (and most probably hasn’t been granted yet). If you are wondering why Sundaram Clayton, then we searched for the registrations of the brand names of Apache RR 310, Apache RTR 180 and other TVS motorcycles and most of them are filed by Sundaram Clayton.

What is TVS RONIN?

The application describes it as…

MOTORIZED LAND VEHICLES, AUTOMOTIVE TWO WHEELERS VIZ., MOTORCYLCES, MOPEDS, SCOOTERS, SCOOTERRETTES, PART THEREOF AND FITTING THEREFOR.

This is the same definition for all previous motorcycles which have been launched by TVS (and then there are some trademarks which are still elusive). So, chances are that this is a two-wheeler and most probably a motorcycle that TVS has in mind. A quick google search tells us that ‘Ronin’ means “a wandering samurai who had no lord or master” in Japan. Samurais were high-skilled warriors.

Now, there are various rumored products TVS is working on. The first bike that will come to everyone’s mind would be the speculated streetfighter version of Apache RR 310. However, even if such a motorcycle is under works, we believe it will still come under the ‘Apache’ moniker.

The next possibility is the production version of Zeppelin cruiser that TVS showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. We hunted for the trademark of Zeppelin but it was nowhere to be found. And rarely have makers named production versions on their concept names.

Ronin – a samurai, kind of, also sounds good on a modern day, aggressive cruiser. And being a new category of motorcycles (cruisers), TVS will definitely have to carve out a different brand since Apaches are reserved for sports motorcycles.

Zeppelin concept was a power cruiser which was powered by a 220cc single cylinder engine. It had many interesting features like 41 mm upside down front forks, dual channel ABS, Bio-key, HD camera, etc. You can check more details of Zeppelin here.
