Italian origin (now owned by Chinese) Benelli hasn’t had a dream run in India so far despite very competitive products. However, that does not have a lot to do with its motorcycles but the problem has been the management.
Its last distributor DSK Motowheels ran into financial trouble and had to wind up operations. However, under its new local distributor Mahavir Group, things look a lot more settled. But just as we thought things were rolling in the right direction, COVID-19 struck!
The young MD of the company Vikas Jhabakh recently, in an interview, said that their plans (of launching new motorcycles) have been delayed because of the pandemic (more details). As a result, the company currently only sells Imperiale 400 as the lone Bharat Stage 6 compliant motorcycle in the Indian market.
Since Benelli doesn’t share its monthly sales (dispatch) numbers, any data pertaining to its performance becomes interesting. Now that FADA has started revealing the actual vehicle registration data on a monthly basis, we get to know the retail sales of all the brands. Here are Benelli’s numbers for December 2020.

Since Imperiale 400 is the only eligible model, all of these must pertain to that one variant. Interestingly, the numbers are (slightly) higher than last year but we must understand that in 2019, Benelli had many models on sale.
