Rajiv Bajaj Reveals Engine Size for Upcoming CNG Motorcycles

What will be the Bajaj CNG motorcycle engine size? If you also have that question, Rajiv Bajaj has just answered that in an interview…

The big talk of the season is CNG in motorcycles. Rajiv Bajaj has announced that it will become the first maker to develop CNG motorcycles that is touted to be the next major breakthrough. In fact, he has announced that Bajaj will launch the first CNG motorcycle as early as next quarter (more details).

He is very hopeful of repeating what Hero Honda CD100 did to the motorcycling world some 4 decades ago and that is saying a lot when we are witnessing a major transition towards electric vehicles every day.

From what we understand, ICE engines when powered by CNG lack that character when the same engine is run on petrol. That means that for a similar amount of responsiveness as say, a 100cc petrol-only motorcycle, a CNG motorcycle may need slightly more firepower, or probably a bigger displacement. We know that CNG motorcycle from Bajaj is just a few weeks away, but what is the segment that Bajaj is eyeing? What capacity can we expect?

This is what Rajiv Bajaj has revealed in an interview to a TV channel. He says that most of our market is concentrated in three displacement regions, 100, 125 and 150/160cc. This is precisely what Bajaj is targeting and in fact, he has indirectly hinted that we can expect CNG motorcycles in each of these three segments. This goes with his statement that there will be a portfolio dedicated to CNG motorcycles.

So, there will be a portfolio of CNG motorcycles which will play in the 100/110cc, 125cc and 150/160cc segments…

This clears a lot of air surrounding what engine size will Bajaj’s CNG motorcycles will come in. Rajiv Bajaj also elaborates that the company will launch one product first, try to get it right and align it to whatever demand comes in. Once things settle down and there is enough demand for such a motorcycle, Bajaj will expand the portfolio to said displacements.

What is not known is the engine capacity that the the first CNG motorcycle will come in! But considering that the test mule that was snapped few days ago was spotted alongside a Platina, we could be looking at something bang in that 100-110cc space as a start point.

The idea will be to offer as high a mileage as possible so that buyers get attracted towards this new genre of motorcycles. It is also clear that there may not be CNG motorcycles of bigger capacities considering that higher displacement motorcycle buyers have fuel efficiency as a lesser criteria.

So, interesting times ahead specially if you are an entry level motorcycle buyer in India and what I am looking forward to is that magical number that Bajaj will claim when it will have its first CNG motorcycle out in the market. And the wait is not very long…
