Yamaha electric 2-wheeler launch in India is not happening anytime soon as we infer from the words of the company’s chairman…
In a recent interview byte, Yamaha’s Chairman Motofumi Shitara revealed that they are working on various EV models which they will go to various global markets including India.
Mr Shitara said that a dedicated team has been formed in Japan, Yamaha’s headquarters, which is working on this project.
The Chairman mentions that electric vehicles are the future of mobility. However, he believes that the transformation from ICE to EV is not going to happen suddenly. He, however, sees few roadblocks for now – that there should be a uniform policy in place by the government along with a widespread charging infrastructure, battery swapping facility and the less-talked about surplus power.
Yamaha already makes EV models in Taiwan in collaboration with Gogoro. This is the same Gogoro that Hero MotoCorp has partnered with, for India. However, clearly, Yamaha doesn’t sound very keen on venturing into this segment anytime soon – at least till it is convinced that there is a strong foundation which can support electric vehicles.
In India, there are brands like Bajaj, TVS and others that already have products in the electric space. However, most of them are selling products in two to three digits monthly.
