TVS Sells Only 144 Motorcycles in 125cc Segment in March

Note: All the figures mentioned here are official SIAM-sourced numbers!

Just a few days back we talked about the declining domestic sales in the 125 cc motorcycle segment which has led us to believe that this particular segment may be shrinking. Each and every manufacturer posted sharp declines for March 2015, last month of the quarter. Apart from Bajaj which was reduced to a paltry 4072 units (from 31,876 units in Mar 14), we catch hold of another manufacturer which has almost gone extinct in this segment. Chennai based TVS registered total sales of…wait a minute….O-N-L-Y 144 units for the complete 31 days of March.

Just to give you a perspective of the fall, they sold 6,648 125 cc motorcycles during the same month last year. That is a drop of about 98 percent or everything! If we step back a month, TVS sold only 453 units in Feb 15 (against 6266 units in Feb 14). They sell the Phoenix in the domestic market which has been refreshed for the MY 15 very recently.

If we talk annual sales, the company in the last fiscal, that is from April 2014 to March 2015, sold 37,420 units which is a significant decline of 58 percent year on year!

On the contrary, their exports have got them some respite! In March 2015 they exported 7,044 units of their 125 cc motorcycles while in the same month last year they exported 2,423. However, the annual export figures for FY 15 continue to disappoint with a total drop of 32 percent and stood at 39,149 units compared to 58,045 units in the last fiscal 2013-14.

In order to plug the gap, apart from the new Phoenix, TVS has confirmed that they will launch the new Victor in India this year. Though, the exact displacement is not known at this point but there may be a variant in the 125cc segment.
