Indian Bikes Sales Figures for January 2011

Hero Honda: Hero Honda the world’s no. 1 two wheeler company has posted growth of 19.68% in the month of January 2011 compared to January 2010.  The company has sold 4,66,524 units of two wheeler in the month of January 2011 compared to 3,89,802 units of two wheeler sold in the month of January 2010.

This is the ninth consecutive month where Hero Honda has sold more than 4 lakh units. However, on the month on month basis the sale is down by 6.90%. The company has sold 5,01,111 units in the month of January 2011 which is second highest ever sales in the company history. The reason behind month on month lower sales is due to the company had overstocked its dealers in the month of December. Hero Honda has sold 44,14,537 units during April 2010 to January 2011 period up 16.07% compared to 38,03,396 units sold in the same period last year.

Anil Dua, senoir VP (Marketing & Sales), Hero Honda Motors, said, ‘Our strong sales for January have provided an excellent start to the new year and also helped continue the sales momentum of the last calendar year. This is the ninth consecutive month of four lakh-plus sales, coming on the back of five-lakh plus sales each in October and December 2010.

The company is in final stage for the announcement of 4th plant. Currently company’s three operational plants have 5.6 million units capacity. The company is running at its optimum capacity to satisfied demand. Going forward we will see 5 lakh+ figure every month after 2-3 months.

Bajaj Auto

Country’s second largest two wheeler maker, Bajaj Auto has reported growth of 18.32 % in the month of January 2011. After a sluggish December this month the company is able to post double digit growth. The company has sold 2,76,622 units of motorcycle in the month of January 2011 compared to 2,32,939 units in the month of January 2010. The company exported 1,03,526 units in the month of January 2011 up by 44.40% compared to 71,695 units in the month of January 2010 which is quite considerable when the company posted mere 4.4% growth in the last month .

On the month on month basis sales is up by 13.34%. The company sold 2,43,675 units in the month of December 2010. The company’s total sales stood at 3,13,583 units in the month of January 2011 up 17.88% compared to 2,66,018 units in the month of January 2010. The company has sold 28,26,994 units of motorcycle during the period of April 2010 to January 2011 up 39.45% compared to 20,27,298 units sold in the same period last year. The company’s export stood at 10,34,401 units during the period of April to January 2011 up 37.85% compared to 7,48,226 units sold in the same period last year. This is the first time in Indian history that any Indian company exported one million units within one year. Bajaj auto has achieved this landmark within 10 months time. Pulsar and Discover combined sales stood around 1,88,000 units which is 68% of overall monthly sales.

Going ahead the company will post sales around this month’s figure in February but from March the company expects to sell over 3 lakh units of motorcycle every month given the fact that company’s 130 new dealers will become operational from the month of March. The company has set goal of 4 million units for this financial year including export and the wheeler out of which it has done 3.2 million units till now.

TVS Motors

TVS Motors has posted growth of 28.79% in the month of January 2011. The company has sold 1,61,725 units in the month of January 2011 compared to 1,25,578 units sold in the month of January 2010. Total sales stood at 1,65,162 units in the month of January 2011 up by 29.75% compared to 1,27,288 units sold in the same period last year.  On the month on basis the company has reported sales drop of 3.94%. The company has sold 1,68,359 units of two wheeler in the month of December 2010.  Cumulative two wheelers sales for the period of April 2010 to January 2011 stood at 16,46,827 units of two wheelers up by 33.39% compared to 12,34,632 units of two wheeler sold in the same period last year.

Domestic sales stood at 1,42,227 units in the month of January 2011 up by  29.88% compared to 1,09,504 units sold in the month of January 2010. Export stood at 19,498 units in the month of January 2011 up by 21.30% compared to 16,074 units sold in January 2010. The company sold 40,736 units of scooter in the month of January 2011 up by 59.69% compared to 25,509 units of scooter sold in the month of January 2010.  Motorcycle sales stood at 67,721 units in the month of January 2011 up by 23.81% compared to 54,698 units sold in the month of January 2010. Moped sales stood at 53,268 units in the month of January 2011 up by 17.41% compared to 45,371 units sold in the month of January 2010.

TVS Motors has posted highest growth among top three players which includes Bajaj Auto and Hero Honda. The main reason behind posting higher sales is higher sales growth in Scooter segment where HMSI is losing market share due to capacity constraint.

Honda India

India’s largest scooter manufacturing company Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Ltd reported growth of mere 8.89% in the month of January 2011. The company reported sales of 1,29,110 units in the month of November  2010 compared to 1,18,571 units in the January 2010. On month on month basis the company’s sales is down by 7.86% due to strikes at company’s plant. The company sold 1,40,642 units in the month of December 2010. The company sold 13,57,871 units during the period April 2010 to January 2011 up by  35.67 % compared to 10,00,835 units sold during the same period last year.

Motorcycle sales stood at 58,365 units in the month of January 2011 up by 22.06% compared to January 2010. On the other hand Scooter sales remained flat. The company sold 70,745 units of scooter in the month of January 2011 compared to 70,756 units in the month of January 2010.

HMSI is growing at very fast rate but the sales are constrained by capacity. As the company’s second plant in Rajasthan is going to become operational within few months the company will post higher sales.

Yamaha India

Yamaha India has reported sales growth of 27.62% in the month of January 2011 compared to January 2010 on the back of new launches like SZ-R. Total sales stood at 28,597 units in the month of January 2011 compared to 22,408 units last year in the same period. The company reported month on month basis sales drop of 17.92%. The company sold 34,839 units in the December 2010. Domestic sales stood at 21,974 units up by 24.87% compared to 17,598 units in the month of January 2011. Export stood at 6,623 units in the month of January 2011 up by 37.69% compared to 4,810 units in the month of January 2010. The company sold 3,03,267 units during April 2010 to January 2011 period up by 25.26% compared to 2,34,405 units during the same period last year.

Expressing happiness over Yamaha’s continued strong performance in India, India Yamaha Motor Director (Sales and Marketing) Koji Arai said, “2010 has been a favorable year for us and we are upbeat about continuing with a strong show this year as well. With the launches of SZ, SZ-R, SZ-X, and YBR 125 last year, we are well-positioned to increase our presence in the Indian market,”

Yamaha India wants to establish itself as a global brand among the Indian consumers. The company is doing it by conducting various marketing activities such as Yamaha R15 One Make Race, Yamaha Safe Riding Science (YSRS) for college students & kids.

Suzuki Motorcycles

Suzuki Motorcycle India reported massive growth of 39.86% in the month of January 2011 compared to January 2010. The company’s total sales stood at 28,598 units in the month of January 2011 compared to 20,448 units in the month of January 2010. The company has reported growth of 10.69% month on month basis after reporting 3 consecutive month of flat sales which means that some capacity expansion is done by the company. The company sold 25,837 units in the month of December 2010. The company sold 2,26,041 units during April 2010 to January 2011 up 55.37% compared to 1,45,107 units in the same period last year.

“We have received very good response from the market to all our products. We are committed to continue this growth momentum in future,” Suzuki Motorcycle India Vice President (Sales and Marketing) Atul Gupta said in a statement. The company attributed its growth to the good response from its motorcycle GS150R, scooter Access125 and mostly the newly launched bike SlingShot.

Mahindra Two wheelers

World’s fastest growing two wheeler company Mahindra two wheeler reported growth of 56.11% in the month of January 2011 compared to January 2010. Total sales stood at 15,623 units in the month of January 2011 compared to 10,008 units in the month of January 2010. The scooter sales stood at 14,754 units in the month of January 2011 up by 79.47% compared to 10,008 units in the month of January 2010. In the motorcycle segment Mahindra Sattalio reported sales of just 509 units in the month of January.  Month on Month basis the company has reported sales growth of 1.95%. The company sold 14,971 units last month. Total cumulative sales from April to December 2010 stood at 138,482 units up by 189% compared to 47,985 units for the same period last year.

This month, Mahindra Two Wheelers crossed the landmark sales figure of 200,000 units. This feat has been achieved in 16 months from the launch of the Power Scooter portfolio in September 2009. Mahindra Two Wheelers has the distinction of achieving this milestone in one of the shortest time spans, as compared to other two wheeler manufacturers. The sales of Mahindra Stallio stood at 5135 units.

Earlier in the month, Mahindra & Mahindra announced its intent to compete in the FIM Road Racing World Championships. Mahindra thus becomes the first Indian motorcycle manufacturer to compete in the MotoGP in the 125cc category.

Summary

The Indian two wheeler industry’s growth rate remains intact. The period April 2010 to January 2011 has witnessed growth of 28.50% over the same period last year. More than 11.50 million units of two wheelers sold during the period of April 2010 to January 2011 compared to 8.5 million units in the same period last year.

Hero Honda the market leader is continuously posting double digit growth after Diwali. It has done more than 4.4 million units sales in the current financial year. Bajaj Auto the second largest manufacturer of two wheelers has sold more than 2.8 million units in the current financial year.

TVS Motors has sold more than 1.64 million units whereas HMSI sales stood at 1.36 million units during April 2010 to January 2011 period. Yamaha India, Suzuki Motorcycle and Mahindra two wheelers sold 0.30 million, 0.23 million and 0.14 million units respectively during the period of April 2010 to January 2010. Going ahead we will continuously have double digit growth in two wheeler industry despite fuel price hike and rising price of two wheelers. But the growth rate will come down in next financial year and upcoming months.
