BREAKING: Bajaj Beats Hero in Total Sales in May 2020

Bajaj vs Hero sales – this was a big talking point when these arch-rivals came extremely close to each other. Fast forward and COVID has turned the tables…

Like all others, Bajaj Auto, deep down, has always wanted to beat Hero Honda (now Hero MotoCorp) in sales. You would probably not know that once the Pune based major came precariously close to Hero Honda – the difference was only a few thousand units (if we remember correctly it was under 5000 units in some month). It was at this time Rajiv Bajaj offered his dealers – ‘Beat Hero Honda and go to Honolulu‘.

However, it was the closest Bajaj ever got to Honda at least in the last two decades in terms of motorcycle sales. Gradually, Hero got separated and HMSI, Honda Japan’s fully owned subsidiary snatched the second largest manufacturer tag from Bajaj. If that was not all, TVS Motor also got the better of Bajaj and it pushed the Pune based motorcycle maker one place down to fourth in the domestic market.

Bajaj continued its focus on the export markets and it is numero uno by a massive margin in that space.

But amidst this COVID-19 led pandemic, things have become absolutely awry. In one big surprise, Bajaj Auto has beaten country’s largest selling maker Hero MotoCorp in May 2020 sales by a whisker. Here is how the tally stands..

During this time period, Bajaj has changed various tactics but Hero has continued focus on the entry level segment…

Bajaj vs Hero Sales – May 2020

Bajaj Sales May 2020

  • Domestic Sales – 39,286 units
  • Exports – 73,512 units
  • Total – 1,12,798 units

Hero Sales May 2020

  • Domestic Sales – 1,08,848 units
  • Exports – 3834 units
  • Total – 1,12,682 units

Obviously, these are very turbulent times and it can not be predicted that this trend would continue in the future when things settle down and sales/dispatches go back to normalcy.

But nonetheless, Bajaj would probably be happy to have achieved what it once was hungry for, even if the happiness is momentary and despite the fact that comes at very uncertain times and at very low bases. In the domestic market, however, Hero has continued its dominance in May month as well.
