UM has been a brand which has been plagued with delays from the word go! While the first showcase at the 2014 Auto Expo got them a good response, they worked on firming their Indian plans for two years. The 2016 Expo finally saw the launch of three motorcycles – Renegade Commando, Sport S and Classic with an all new engine.
When we last spoke to the management, they had announced that deliveries of these bikes will begin from the month of May. While Commando and Sport S were planned to be sold from starting, Classic was scheduled to come later. However we have come to know that deliveries of these bikes are further delayed by a month or two!
With bookings on since the Auto Expo, the manufacturer informs that they have reached the figure of 1000 units which is encouraging. Deliveries now will commence from June-July!
The 279 cc water cooled single cylinder mill of these motorcycles produces 25 bhp of maximum power and 21.8 Nm of peak torque. Mated to this is a 6 speed transmission.
UM has also announced that they will initially begin with 25 dealerships (list here). The Sport S has been priced at Rs 1.49 lakhs while the Commando has an asking price of Rs 1.59 lakhs (both ex-showroom, Delhi).
In an exclusive word with the top UM officials, we got to know that they are testing a 350 cc V twin mill which was scheduled to be introduced/unveiled in October (full report here) but going by these delays, it may also get impacted and come sometime later.
