KTM 390 SMC India Launch Expected By 2026 End; Could Arrive With New 350cc Engine

KTM is expected to introduce its first supermoto in India later this year, although it could ditch the ‘R’ badge in favour of a new 350cc engine shared with the Duke and Adventure range

KTM India appears to be gearing up to introduce the much-awaited supermoto to the domestic market before the end of this year. Globally known as the 390 SMC R, the motorcycle has already generated plenty of interest among enthusiasts thanks to its lightweight construction, upright ergonomics and fun-to-ride character. It is made in India and sold globally. It is only a matter of time before it hits our roads as well.

The biggest talking point is expected to be the engine. Instead of the 399 cc LC4c motor powering the international-spec 390 SMC R, the Indian model is likely to adopt KTM’s 350 cc single-cylinder engine. The new powertrain has already made its way into the Duke and Adventure range as KTM looks to rationalise its portfolio for markets like India.

If this happens, the motorcycle could also lose the ‘R’ badge. The ‘R’ could be reserved for the more powerful 390 cc variant. While the company is yet to confirm the final name, the move would help distinguish the India-spec motorcycle from the larger-capacity international version. Yes, two motorcycles 390 SMC and 390 SMC R could be on the cards.

In terms of power, the 350 cc motor produces 41 bhp and 33.5 Nm while the 390 cc variant makes 45.3 bhp and 39 Nm of peak torque. Despite the expected change in engine, the motorcycle is unlikely to lose its supermoto character. It is expected to retain its lightweight trellis frame, long-travel suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends and sharp bodywork inspired by KTM’s global SMC R range. An upright riding position, minimal body panels and aggressive ergonomics should continue to be part of the package.

The upcoming model is expected to share several components with the latest 390 platform, including a TFT instrument console, ride-by-wire throttle, switchable ABS, traction control and multiple ride modes. Depending on KTM India’s positioning strategy, some of these features could be tweaked to achieve a more competitive price point.

Supermotos remain a niche segment in India, but the arrival of KTM’s new offering could help introduce more riders to this unique style of motorcycling. With its lightweight nature, agile handling and playful dynamics, the upcoming SMC has the potential to create a segment of its own. If reports are accurate, an official debut could take place before the end of 2026.
