Honda to Launch New Premium Bikes and Electric Scooters in India

Honda has stated that it will introduce new premium motorcycles (200cc+ engine) and electric scooters in FY27 in the Indian market with a higher degree of localisation

Honda 2-Wheelers India, adapting to the premiumisation trend in the motorcycle segment, will introduce multiple premium models with engine capacity above 200cc in the country. In addition, the Japanese brand also confirmed the launch of new electric scooters in FY27 in the Indian market. The company will also increase localisation levels and expand manufacturing capacity for the smooth roll out of these new premium bikes and electric scooters. Honda stated that it will target the ‘fast-growing higher-displacement segments’ with the upcoming premium motorcycles.

“In the past, the market for recreational motorcycles was limited. But rising GDP, increasing disposable incomes and greater exposure to global products are changing customer preferences. We are preparing for this growth by introducing more localised models,” Tsutsumu Otani, president, CEO and managing director, HMSI, told TOI. Honda’s 81 percent of sales came from the 110cc-125cc segment in FY26 as it sold close to 26 lakh bikes in our country.

The 151-350cc segment contributed only 13 percent in the brand’s overall motorcycle sales in FY26. Hence, Honda felt the need to strengthen its premium product line-up by introducing new models to stay afloat in the competitive market. The company further clarified that it is working closely with the vendors for heavier localisation of components for its upcoming premium motorcycles with engine capacity above 200cc.

“Our strategy is centred on ‘Make in India’. We have a wide global portfolio, but introducing products in India requires localisation and supplier readiness. We will continue bringing new models step by step while improving localisation,” added Otani. Honda is expanding the annual production capacity at the Tapukara facility in Rajasthan and Vithalapur factory in Gujarat by 6.5 lakh units.

The country’s second-biggest two-wheeler brand will have an annual manufacturing capacity of nearly 8 million units by FY2028. Coming to the new electric scooters, they are all set to be launched within this financial year in India. However, Honda argues that the speed of transition will depend on the availability of the charging infrastructure. It is not hidden anymore that India will play a major role in Honda’s global manufacturing network.

“India remains one of Honda’s most important global markets and a strategic export hub. We have continued investing by expanding manufacturing capacity, strengthening localisation and enhancing supplier capabilities,” concluded Otani. The company is shifting the production of certain models from China and Japan to India, and it is likely to further increase in the coming years due to India’s expanding network of free trade agreements.
