Indian Bikes Sales Figures for February 2011

Hero Honda: Hero Honda the world’s no. 1 two wheeler company has posted growth of 23.54% in the month of February 2011 compared to February 2010.  The company has sold 4,72,055 units of two wheeler in the month of February 2011 compared to 3,82,096 units of two wheeler sold in the month of February 2010.

This is the tenth consecutive month where Hero Honda has sold more than 4 lakh units. On the month on month basis the sale is up by 1.19%. The company sold 4,66,524 units in the month of January 2011. Hero Honda has sold 48,86,592 units during April 2010 to February 2011 period up 16.75% compared to 41,85,492 units sold in the same period last year.

Anil Dua Hero Honda Motors Senior Vice-President (Marketing and Sales) said “Our performance throughout this fiscal has been very consistent and the strong February numbers are a positive indication for the growth to continue. The company’s scooter model ‘Pleasure’ continues to do exceedingly well with clocking an average of 30,000 units a month”.

The company is in final stage for the announcement of 4th plant. Currently company’s three operational plants have 5.6 million units capacity. The company is running at its optimum capacity to satisfied demand. Going forward we will see 5 lakh+ figure every month from March or April month.

Bajaj Auto

Country’s second largest two wheeler maker, Bajaj Auto has reported growth of 22.18 % in the month of February 2011.This is by far company’s highest ever monthly sales for February month. The company has sold 2,86,657 units of motorcycle in the month of February 2011 compared to 2,34,623 units in the month of February 2010. The company exported 1,02,433 units in the month of February 2011 up by 31.93% compared to 77,642 units in the month of February 2010 which is quite considerable even after crisis situation in Egypt.

On the month on month basis sales is up by 3.63%. The company sold 2,76,622 units in the month of January 2011. The company’s total sales stood at 3,26,874 units in the month of February 2011 up 21.66% compared to 2,68,678 units in the month of February 2010. The company has sold 31,12,551 units of motorcycle during the period of April 2010 to February 2011 up 37.61% compared to 22,61,921 units sold in the same period last year. The company’s export stood at 11,33,834 units during the period of April to February 2011 up 37.29% compared to 8,25,868 units sold in the same period last year. Pulsar and Discover combined sales stood around 1,92,000 units which is 67% of overall motorcycle sales of February 2011.

Going ahead the company the company expects to sell over 3 lakh units of motorcycle every month given the fact that company’s 130 new dealers will become operational from the month of March. Moreover the company has recently refreshed it’s existing variant of Discover 100cc and 150cc. The company is also going to launch new version of Discover in the month of April. Cumulative sales for Pulsar have crossed 4 million marks. The company has set goal of 4 million units for this financial year including export and the wheeler out of which it has done 3.5 million units till now.

TVS Motors

TVS Motors has posted growth of 23.24% in the month of February 2011. The company has sold 1,73,200 units in the month of February 2011 compared to 1,40,544 units sold in the month of February 2010. Total sales stood at 1,77,412 units in the month of February 2011 up by 24.35% compared to 1,42,676 units sold in the same period last year.  On the month on basis the company has reported sales growth of 7.39%. The company has sold 1,61,275 units of two wheeler in the month of January 2011.  Cumulative two wheelers sales for the period of April 2010 to February 2011 stood at 18,20,027 units of two wheelers up by 32.35% compared to 13,75,176 units of two wheeler sold in the same period last year.

Domestic sales stood at 1,51,526 units in the month of February 2011 up by  24.81% compared to 1,21,403 units sold in the month of February 2010. Export stood at 24,036 units in the month of January 2011 up by 13.30% compared to 21,270 units sold in February 2010. The company sold 40,535 units of scooter in the month of February 2011 up by 50.04% compared to 27,017 units of scooter sold in the month of February 2010.  Motorcycle sales stood at 71,462 units in the month of February 2011 up by 13.01% compared to 63,394 units sold in the month of February 2010. Moped sales stood at 61,203 units in the month of February2011.

TVS Motors growth is slowing down as seen in the case of Bajaj auto. The main reason behind growth slowdown is slowdown in the sales growth of Scooter segment. The company has just launched ABS version of its top performer brand TVS Apache RTR.

HMSI

India’s largest scooter manufacturing company Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Ltd reported growth of mere 19.27% in the month of February 2011. The company reported sales of 1,45,819 units in the month of February  2011 compared to 1,22,261 units in the February 2010. On month on month basis the company’s sales is up by 12.94% as the strike issue is resloved. The company sold 1,29,110 units in the month of January 2011. The company sold 15,03,690 units during the period April 2010 to February 2011 up by  33.89 % compared to 11,23,096 units sold during the same period last year.

Motorcycle sales stood at 65,890 units in the month of February 2011 up by 27.54% compared to 51,661 units in the month of February 2010. On the other hand Scooter sales grew by 13.21%. The company sold 79,929 units of scooter in the month of February 2011 compared to 70,600 units in the month of February 2010.

HMSI is growing at very fast rate but the sales are constrained by capacity. As the company’s second plant in Rajasthan is going to become operational within few months the company will post higher sales.

Yamaha India

Yamaha India has reported sales growth of 28.26% in the month of January 2011 compared to February 2010 on the back of new launches like SZ-R. Total sales stood at 33,046 units in the month of February 2011 compared to 25,764 units last year in the same period. The company reported month on month basis sales growth of 15.15%. The company sold 28,697 units in the January 2011. Domestic sales stood at 23,384 units up by 36.50% compared to 17,131 units in the month of February 2011. Export stood at 9,662 units in the month of February 2011 up by 11.57% compared to 8,633 units in the month of February 2010. The company sold 3,36,313 units during April 2010 to February 2011 period up by 29.27% compared to 2,60,169 units during the same period last year.

Expressing happiness over Yamaha’s continued strong performance India Yamaha Motor Chief Executive Officer and MD Hiroyuki Suzuki said “The company has displayed an upbeat spell in sales, on account of a strong product portfolio and high customer confidence. The company attributed its growth to models such as YZF-R15, FZ, SZ and YBR series”

Yamaha India wants to establish itself as a global brand among the Indian consumers. The company is doing it by conducting various marketing activities such as Yamaha R15 One Make

Suzuki Motorcycles

Suzuki Motorcycle India reported massive growth of 24.86% in the month of February 2011 compared to February 2010. The company’s total sales stood at 28,738 units in the month of February 2011 compared to 23,016 units in the month of February 2010. The company has reported growth flat of 0.50 % month on month which means the company again started feeling heat of capacity constraint. The company sold 28,598 units in the month of January 2011. The company sold 2,54,779 units during April 2010 to February 2011 up 51.54% compared to 1,68,123 units in the same period last year.

It seems like Suzuki motorcycle scooter Access 125 is doing exceptionally well into the market and hence its reason for the continued strong sales. Apart from this company’s recent launch Suzuki Slingshot is also doing good business. We will see Suzuki motorcycle to post higher sales and moving ahead from Yamaha Motors in few month.

Mahindra Two Wheelers

World’s fastest growing two wheeler company Mahindra two wheeler reported growth of 30.39% in the month of February 2011 compared to February 2010. Total sales stood at 12,682 units in the month of February 2011 compared to 9,726 units in the month of February 2010. The scooter sales stood at 12,682 units in the month of February 2011 up by 30.39% compared to 9,726 units in the month of February 2010.  As the production of Mahindra Sattalio halted the company has not reported any sales for Mahindra Sattalio. Month on Month basis the company has reported sales decline of 18.82%. The company sold 15,623 units last month. Total cumulative sales from April to February 2011 stood at 151,164 units up by 162% compared to 57,711 units for the same period last year.

It seems that the company will not be able to report any higher growth rate in upcoming month as the demand for scooter is slowing down compared to previous month. Moreover market leader HMSI is going to set up second plant which will reduce waiting period for Activa. It will affect Mahindra two wheeler the most as the company mostly gain sales due unavailability of Activa. Upcoming months will be very challenging for Mahindra two wheelers.

Summary

The Indian two wheeler industry’s growth rate remains intact. The period April 2010 to February 2011 has witnessed growth of 27.90% over the same period last year. More than 12.00 million units of two wheelers sold during the period of April 2010 to February 2011 compared to 9.4 million units in the same period last year.

Hero Honda the market leader is continuously posting double digit growth after Diwali. It has done nearly 4.9 million units sales in the current financial year. Bajaj Auto the second largest manufacturer of two wheelers has sold more than 3.1 million units in the current financial year.

TVS Motors has sold more than 1.82 million units whereas HMSI sales stood at 1.50 million units during April 2010 to February 2011 period. Yamaha India, Suzuki Motorcycle and Mahindra two wheelers sold 0.34 million, 0.25 million and 0.15 million units respectively during the period of April 2010 to February 2010. Going ahead we will continuously have double digit growth in two wheeler industry despite fuel price hike and rising price of two wheelers as there are several new product launches in pipeline for next 6 month. But the growth rate will come down in next financial year and upcoming months.
