Turnaround: Bajaj Beats Honda in 100-125cc Motorcycle Sales in FY21

Here is a list of highest selling makers in the 100-125cc motorcycle segment. See how Bajaj has turned around things this year…

Honda was selling insane number of motorcycles when it was with Hero. However, ever since it went solo, it has always found it difficult to move motorcycles. On the other hand, there is no other maker which is even close to Honda when it comes to scooters.

The number one manufacturer in entry level (100-125cc) motorcycles is Hero and we have discussed how massive a lead it has in this story. Amid all this, we have seen a turnaround in the second place in this financial year’s sales so far. Here are the numbers..

CD Deluxe is Honda’s most affordable bike but it is still pretty costly in the 100cc segment…

As you can see, all the makers have witnessed steep drops in sales this year because of the COVID pandemic. However, notice sales of the second and third place holders. Bajaj was third last year during this period, however, it has made a turnaround this fiscal and has beaten Honda for the second spot. But the difference is just 33,397 units. It would be interesting to see if Honda can close this gap in the remaining part of the year.

Splendor is the undisputed leader in this segment with insane sales, month on month!

However, effective revenue from these motorcycles may be higher for Honda as it does not play in the extremely entry level motorcycle segment. In fact, CD Deluxe – Honda’s most affordable bike – is one of costliest in the segment. However, Honda has hinted that it is making a cheaper motorcycle which will sit under the CD (details here).

Also notice, how the exit from the 125cc motorcycle segment has impacted TVS. Against 31,710 units it registered in this segment in 2019, there is zero sale this year. What do you think – how will this year pan out for Bajaj and Honda..?
