Massive Fall: Splendor Registers Year’s Lowest Sales in July

Hero Splendor sales have fallen to a new low this July – Should this be alarming for the brand or is it just one bad month for the super seller?

Splendor has been Hero’s bread and butter brand and it has been India’s favourite motorcycle for decades now. For the last many years, the fight for the top slot in India’s largest selling two-wheeler for a particular month has been fought by Honda Activa and Hero Splendor. But irrespective of whoever won, Splendor has held the top position for motorcycles for the last many years.

However, the month of July 2019 has turned the tables around and Splendor registered total sales of only 1.30 Lakh units (1,30,333 to be precise) which are half of what it achieved in the same period last year. But there has been a change – Hero has started revealing Super Splendor’s numbers individually from May 2019 onwards (which were collated prior to that).

This drop holds a big significance because..

  • These are Splendor’s lowest monthly numbers in at least the last fourteen months of data we have.
  • If we club Super Splendor’s numbers, the total rises to 178,907 units in July which is still among the two worst months for the Splendor brand (it did similar numbers of 178,411 in December 2018).
  • With its July’s numbers, Splendor is no more the largest selling motorcycle in India. The title, quite respectfully, has shifted to its sibling HF Deluxe which managed 1,69,632 unit sales in the same period.

Hero sells two variants of Splendor in the 100cc segment – Splendor+ IBS which is powered by the Honda-sourced 97 cc engine and the Splendor iSmart+ IBS which is equipped with Hero’s indigenously developed 110 cc motor (IBS stands for integrated braking system – Hero’s terminology for CBS).

Is Hero Working on New Motorcycle – HUNTER?

It has been trying to shift sales to its own engines and technologies but so far the response (to indigenous Hero tech) has been lukewarm. Splendor is Hero’s most important brand and it will be interesting to see how do they plan to take it over the upcoming BSVI hurdle…
