The Chetak EV production will be scaled up to meet the higher demand from all corners of the country
Bajaj Chetak EV crossed 1 lakh units sales milestone in the Q4 FY26 in the Indian market. Hence, the company is now actively working on increasing the production of the electric scooter to bridge the demand-supply gap. It had registered sales of more than 50,000 units in Mar 2026 with a market share of around 23 percent in the electric two-wheeler segment. As per reports, the demand for Chetak EV is constantly outpacing supply volumes as waiting period for certain variants is on a rise across several cities.
Rakesh Sharma – Executive Director of Bajaj Auto, was recently speaking to analysts in a conference call announcing Q4 results. He said, “We are taking steps. There is some serious work going on to see how and where we should expand capacity in a quantum manner. But yes, we have now reached a position where we think a substantive increase in capacity in Chetak is needed.”
Sharma will take over the position of Joint Managing Director of Bajaj Auto from June 1. The Chetak EV has been clocking average monthly sales of 35,000 units in the domestic market with fierce competition from TVS iQube. Sharma admitted that Bajaj has not been able to match the production capacity with the demand “for one reason or the other”.

“Sometimes we also get exasperated that everything is not working in every department and every month. And therefore, we have not been able to reach our potential, which I think is much higher in terms of share,” told Sharma. The electric scooter segment in India witnessed a YoY growth of 40 percent in Q4 FY26 while the YoY growth rate in Apr 2026 was more than 60 percent.
Rakesh stated that “things did come together” to some extent towards the end of the fourth quarter, as the production capacity has now touched 50,000 units per month. “I think we will max that. I am only hoping that all this labour issue and the availability of fuel in Tier 1/2 vendors does not play a spoiler and we achieve 100 per cent utilisation,” added Sharma.

The electric scooter segment outnumbered the growth of ICE models in Apr 2026. The recently launched Chetak C25 has received thunderous reception from the buyers in out country. “A key contributor to the sequential share in Q4 has been the Chetak C25, our new variant launched to address specifically the needs of the youth for lighter, faster and easier last mile mobility,” concluded Sharma.
