Honda Activa has been India’s largest selling automatic Scooter and has managed to become India’s best selling two-wheeler in March 2014, clocking 1,79,956 units. This comes just after a day we were informed about Shine becoming the largest selling 125cc in the country.
As per Honda, this has happened for the second time in the financial year 2013-14. In comparison, they sold 1,08,815 units in March 2013, registering a growth of 65 per cent. It displaced Hero Splendor for the top slot.
Launched in FY 2001-02, with a 102cc mill producing 7bhp of power, and tried to woo customers with its full body looks and claims of puncture resistant ‘tuff-up’ tires. The Activa then evolved to a 109cc 8BHP heart with a new combi-brake feature.
The Activa is leading by a healthy margin of nearly 12,952 units over the second largest selling two-wheeler model, Splendor in India. This is a chilling fact for Hero and a big surprise for India. Back in the early 2000s, when the scooter segment was dying, nobody had expected that, eventually, a scooter will go on to become country’s largest seller!

Add to that Honda is slated to launch Activa 125 very soon. The scooter was first showcased at the Auto Expo in February. The single cylinder, four stroke mill is to produce 8.6 bhp of power and 10.12Nm of torque, claiming an efficiency of around 65kpl. This variant will compete against the Suzuki Access, Piaggio Vespa and Mahindra’s Duro and Rodeo.
Activa 125 will be made available in two variants with prices starting at around Rs 52,000. The new bigger Activa 125 will be launched on April 28 and will be available for sale on the same day itself.
