Ather Energy to Launch Electric Motorcycle in Next 3 Years: CTO Swapnil Jain

The brand’s first electric motorcycle in India will deliver performance equivalent to an ICE-powered 150-300cc model

Ather Energy recently launched its most affordable electric scooter in the form of the Konarc in India. On the sidelines of launch, the company confirmed that it is planning to introduce an electric motorcycle in the Indian market, which will deliver performance equivalent to an ICE-powered 150-300cc model as it launches by late 2029. The Bengaluru-based pure EV brand stated that it would take around three years for the new electric motorcycle to arrive in the market as it is still working on the exact model type.

“The biggest challenge with electric motorcycle is not technical, it is about understanding the customers really well. It’s not as simple as a scooter, which is a bit more of a utility product. A motorcycle is a very emotional piece,” Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Swapnil Jain told Business Standard. He further told the reporters that Ather Energy has spent over a year studying motorcycle customers.

However, the brand has still not been able to fully grasp the various body types and preferences in the motorcycle market. “We still believe it will be somewhere between the 150cc and 300cc segments. But we need more information before we can say what its exact form will be and what the target market will be,” added Jain. The company has been delaying its electric motorcycle plans for the last few years to focus on scooters.

Originally, Ather Energy had elaborate plans to launch its first electric motorcycle in 2026. However, Tarun Mehta, Co-founder & CEO, in Aug 2025, informed about the delay with no definite launch timeline. Mehta further stated that the company is focusing on the 150-180cc segment for electric motorcycles. Last month, he said that motorcycles would take ‘probably more than two years’ to arrive while speaking to investors.

Swapnil Jain was of the view that motorcycles are not just meant for transportation but they are a reflection of the owner’s identity. Hence, the engineering team at Ather Energy is taking its sweet time to developing the motorcycle’s architecture beyond the final product. They’re working on parameters like voltage, top speed, battery cells, and battery chemistry.

He said, “We’re currently working on two things simultaneously, very similar to what we did with the EL platform. First, we’re independently developing a platform that can support a specific range of battery packs and motor power, and which will certainly incorporate some of the Ather features.” He added that motorcycles are a more emotional object for people than scooters.
