There is a big Yezdi trademark issue for Classic Legends and according to a court ruling it has to stop its sales within one month…
So far we have believed that Classic Legends, a subsidiary of Mahindra Group owned marquee brand names like Jawa, Yezdi and BSA. In fact, under Mahindra’s ownership, all the three brands are now back live and selling in various markets of the world.
However, there is a big development on this front – on the usage of Yezdi branding. Karnataka High Court has ruled that Classic Legends can not use the Yezdi branding on its motorcycles (or anywhere else) as this brand still falls under the ownership of Ideal Jawa (India) Ltd – a company which went to liquidation and the matter is still pending resolution. The court has also quashed all trademark and registration certificates issued by Registrar of Trademarks.
Not only this – the High Court has also fined Classic Legends and Boman Irani (of Rustomjee Group) Rs 10 lakh each and it has directed Classic Legends to pay all gains it has made from the usage of the Yezdi brand to Ideal Jawa. The company is directed to stop sale of Yezdi motorcycles (and anything related to it) within one month! As a slight relief, Classic Legends has one month to challenge the matter.
Honda CB300F Gets Massive Price Slash; Lovely Bargain NOW..?
An official response issued by Classic Legends says that it will file an appeal against the order very soon and hopes for a relief. It further says that it will NOT stop manufacturing and selling Yezdi motorcycles for now.
This is a big setback for the Mahindra owned brand and controversies like these may further hamper sales which are already below expectations.
