Yamaha calls its recently launched (not in India) YZF R25, their quarter litre pocket rocket, an everyday sports bike. Something which will be a great ride for everyday use to glide through the traffic in a highly nimble, and graceful manner, yet at the same time not shying away from lifting up the skirt and riding away to glory at a race track.
In its current avatar, the motorcycle is a fully faired sports bike and if you are a naked-lover (we mean the motorcycle 😉 ), the R25 may just be another motorcycle for you. However, uptill now! A new report published at an Indonesian blog, Iwanbanaran.com, claims that Yamaha will be launching a naked version of the R25 in the market!
Well, the exact details are not known yet so we do not know when to expect the bike, or anything about the output figures yet, but as has been the norm internationally, it would be an R25 sans the fairing and a wee bit of other related changes.
With the naked R25, Yamaha would be aiming to target the city scorchers who do not want to buy an excessively sporty motorcycle and instead, prefer a more comfortable regular road-going steed!
The 249cc twin cylinder on the R25 produces 36PS of power at 12000rpm and 22.6Nm at 10000rpm, all of this with a kerb weight of just 166kg. Now imagine an even lower weight, thanks to the absence of the fairing, which will correspondingly lead to an even higher power to weight ratio! But will Yamaha de-tune the engine to keep proper differentiation? We certainly hope not.
The R25 has seen some tremendous response in Indonesia, but Yamaha has kept the production limited. It is still not clear about the number of units which Yamaha plans to clock with this new naked pocket monster. This can be seen as an attempt to take on the Kawasaki’s Ninja and Z series, something which was clearly expected right since talks about the R25 first emerged.
Back home, KTM’s recently launched RC twins (RC390 and RC200) and Duke siblings (Duke 200 and Duke 390) are perfect examples of this amalgamation of faired and naked products from the same platform. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde reborn eh?
