You are NOT Starving, So Pay for Costly Petrol: Govt to People

Continuous Petrol Price Increase: so, this is the government’s view…

You already know that petrol prices are at an alarming three year high however, since it has come under the master stroke of ‘Daily Price Revision‘ it has gone largely unnoticed. In two and a half months, price of petrol has gone up by whopping Rs 6+ per liter. In percentage terms this is more than 10 percent increment when compared with petrol price on June 2nd 2017 (in Delhi).

The government is blatantly increasing taxes on fuel and this comes at a time when international crude prices are low and instead warrant a price reduction. It must also be known that the current ruling government has increased Central Excise Duty on petrol from Rs 9.48 to Rs 21.48 in 3 plus years of rule. Central Excise Duty on diesel has been hiked by whopping four times to Rs 17.33 (from Rs 3.56 of the older government times).

BJP’s Take

So, what is BJP’s take on this? A statement given by Union Minister KJ Alphons said that this (continuous fuel price increase) is an intentional decision by the government. He added that they will tax people who can afford to pay. According to him, petrol (fuel) is bought by car and motorcycle owners who are NOT STARVING and hence can pay for (whatever charges are levied on) fuel.

As per the Hindu, this is what the eminent minister had in his mind,

“It is an intentional decision made by the government,……We are going to tax people who can afford to pay. Who buys petrol? Somebody who has a car or bike is certainly not starving. Somebody who can afford to pay, has to pay.”

Now, that is a supremely brilliant idea and by that very logic – do not be surprised if, tomorrow, robbery is made legal in India!
