New 2016 Suzuki Access Unveiled – Launch in April: Looks Good But a Goof-up… [Auto Expo 2016]

The Auto Expo was not just about concept motorcycles but also ‘MotoGP’ inspired scooters! Or so Suzuki will have us believe. They have updated their scooter, the Access 125. The change this time has not merely been cosmetic but also mechanical. The new 2016 Access gains a new air cooled 124 cc SOHC mill with SEP (Suzuki Eco Performance) technology.

The engine now produces 8.7 PS of maximum power at 7,000 rpm and 10.2 Nm of peak torque at 5,000 rpm. In comparison the previous generation model produced the same power output but the torque output was rated at 9.8 Nm. In the process, Access has also lost whopping 10 kilos and now has a kerb weight of 102 kg.

It is 1,870 mm long (increase by 90 mm), 655 mm wide (up by 5 mm) and has an overall height of 1,160 mm (taller by 35 mm). The wheelbase too has been increased from 1,250 mm to 1,265 mm. The seat height and ground clearance remains the same at 780 mm and 160 mm respectively. Like what has been the trend so far, Suzuki has also increased the front tyre size to 12 inches (from 10!).

The fuel tank can hold slightly lesser fuel now – 5.6 litres from 6 litres. The scooter now gains chrome inserts with a new design which we really like. Its a classic new-age design with clean lines and a typical Japanese look. However, the punch line mentioned is what is interesting (and hilarious!)…

“……Access 125 is…………developed by Suzuki from its MotoGP racing experience, resulting in top class fuel efficiency and ….”

MotoGP racing tech for top class fuel efficiency – really Suzuki? You could have said MotoGP tech for shedding weight (10 kg loss is phenomenal for an already ~110 kg two-wheeler) or probably even (only) the performance!
