SPIED: Kawasaki Spotted Testing Xpulse Rival; Will be Locally Made

Road-legal Kawasaki KLX230S spy pics have surfaced on the internet suggesting a new Xpulse rival is under tests. Let’s discuss quick details…

It is now well known that Indians like Adventure/dual purpose motorcycles. And to take advantage of the demand makers are introducing models in this segment. We already know that out of all the Hero’s 200cc models, it is only the Xpulse 200 that has succeeded in the market. Clubbed together with the success of the Himalayan, the entry level adventure segment is definitely a hot bed right now.

Kawasaki seems to be eyeing this space and has been caught testing its KLX230 S in India. Now, you may pass this info considering the high prices its motorcycles generally entail. However, do note that its locally manufactured Ninja 300 is the most affordable multi cylinder faired motorcycle in India and even the W175 (why does it exist?) is cheaper than the likes of FZX, etc. And to add, the KLX being tested here will also be locally made.

Now, that must have given you a ray of hope – of a quality entry level adventure motorcycle from a Jap – at, hopefully, sensible prices.

The KLX230 S is the road legal version of the KLX 230 RS off-roader that is already on sale here in India (but it is imported here as a CBU and costs a lot). The S will share the same, simple 233cc, air cooled, single cylinder engine with its sibling and produce power and torque outputs of close to 20 hp and 20 Nm. Which brings into the equation the Hero’s Xpulse 200 which also churns similar numbers.

The KLX 230S will be an off-road focused dual-purpose motorcycle and will definitely have a lot of potential for fun. If Kawasaki can offer it at reasonable prices, we may definitely have a fairly big chunk of buyers of this segment scouting for one. But if, despite local production, prices are high, the Jap may be wasting its time going through all the testing and localisation process.

Launch timeline can not be ascertained right now but a festive introduction can not be ruled out. And if this is not all – the Jap is also preparing the localized Versys 300 for our market – which could go onto become India’s most affordable multi-cylinder ADV here (details here).
