Honda Patents CB4X – New Mid-Size Crossover

Honda CB4X going to production? The Jap has patented its design in Europe and this looks extremely interesting…

Honda is working on a lot of configurations for its bikes. In a latest update, the Jap has filed for a patent of its new mid-size CB4X. CB4X was showcased as a concept at the 2019 EICMA show. The styling of this new crossover is extremely aggressive and striking. The good thing is that Honda has not altered the design of the concept a lot.

The most interesting thing about this motorcycle is that motor – It is a four cylinder engine which looks eerily similar to the CB650R (or in the Indian context the CBR 650R since it is on sale here) from the outside. So, chances are pretty high that CB4X is being planned with the same motor.

Chances are that Honda may not promote it as an ADV because generally, owing to their high revving nature, four cylinder engines are not a preferred choice in ADVs where bottom and mid range is the major requirement. Plus, alloys are never very off-road friendly. This could well fit in the category of crossovers/sports tourers with better highway munching capabilities.

The semi-fairing appears to be a connected unit – ie it is not a bolt-on on the tank that is generally the case. The four pipes from respective cylinders converge and end up making dual canisters. It sports a slim LED headlamp.

This patent has been filed in the European Intellectual Property Office and let us see how soon can the motorcycle hit production lines. If it actually does, we will hope Honda considers it for India (and since the 650R is already here, the X may also fit in!).

Honda India has already announced that it will introduce as many as 5 ‘Fun’ motorcycles in the domestic market this year (more details) and we would love to see this CB4X fighting it out against the Versys 650 and others. If not this year, then probably next year…
