So, Harley Davidson America must be a happy lot today – after handing over most of the Indian business to Hero MotoCorp. This way it can focus on its key markets and leave the growing ones to local players who have expertise in mass manufacturing.

The X440, that is being manufactured and sold by Hero MotoCorp in India is the company’s most affordable motorcycle ever. It has opened to a very good start and deliveries have just commenced around mid-October. Hero has also opened second bookings window for people who want to own it, but at a higher price tag.

It is, then, obvious, to expect more motorcycles on this platform and Hero has already announced its version that is coming this fiscal. We believe it will be a streetfighter with fair bit of changes to adjust it for a different brand. In a latest, a latest speculative report claims that the second motorcycle on this platform that will be sold under the Harley Davidson moniker will be a scrambler.

If this is true then it is safe to expect similar hardware however a scrambler needs to have knobby tyres, higher ground clearance, relatively higher seat height and fair bit of off-road ability. To what extent will Harley and Hero go in making the new motorcycle a ‘Scrambler’ will determine the level of differences w.r.t the existing X440 which is a low-riding roadster.

The prospects of a Harley X440 Scrambler look good considering the impressive low-end and mid-range of the existing motor. With a little off-road ability, we may have a worthy rival against the Triumph Scrambler 400X. Launch timelines are not known at this point but a motorcycle next year can safely be expected from Harley Davidson…
