From a massive 70-litre storage space to a claimed 243 km range, the Simple Wave is clearly designed to make electric scooters more practical for everyday Indian families
Simple Energy has taken a very different route with its latest electric scooter. Unlike the sporty One range, the Simple Wave is designed as a family scooter, with the focus firmly on comfort, practicality and everyday usability. Prices start at Rs 1.09 lakh, while the top-spec Wave+ costs Rs 1.89 lakh. Here are the five things that make the Wave interesting.
1. 70 litres of storage
This is easily the Wave’s party trick. Simple claims 70 litres of total storage, including a massive 63-litre under-seat compartment. There are also additional storage spaces on the body panels and a front cubby. For an Indian family scooter, this could be genuinely useful. A couple of shopping bags, a backpack and everyday knick-knacks should have no trouble finding space.
2. Up to 243 km of claimed range
The Wave is offered with battery capacities ranging from 2.2 kWh to 5 kWh. The entry-level version has a claimed 110 km IDC range, while the 2.7 kWh version manages 132 km. The 3.7 kWh Wave gets 171 km, and the range-topping Wave+ promises an impressive 243 km on a single charge. The scooter uses a 6.4 kW electric motor and can reach up to 90 km/h, depending on the variant.
3. It is built around practicality
Simple has gone for a conventional family-scooter layout rather than the sharp, performance-oriented design of its existing products. The Wave gets a 920 mm-long seat, a flat floorboard and twin rear shocks, making it look much more suited to carrying a rider and pillion. The top-spec version can accelerate from 0 to 40 kmph in 3.3 seconds, so it isn’t exactly slow either.
4. Plenty of technology
Depending on the variant, the Wave gets either a 5-inch LCD or 7-inch TFT display. The TFT-equipped versions bring Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, call and SMS alerts, OTA updates and music controls. Higher variants also get hill-hold assist and GripSense traction control, while regenerative braking is also available.
5. It isn’t just about range
Simple has also paid attention to safety and everyday convenience. The Wave gets a front disc and rear drum setup with CBS, along with features such as geo-fencing, time-fencing, theft alerts and tow alerts. The higher-spec version also gets a fall-alert system. Prices start at Rs 1.09 lakh and go up to Rs 1.89 lakh for the Wave+, putting it directly in the crosshairs of scooters such as the Ather Konarc, TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak.
