Ola Electric has slipped to fifth position in electric scooter sales, even behind Hero MotoCorp, in e-scooter sales. As per the data available on Vahan portal, the Bhavish Aggarwal-led brand recorded 7,567 electric two-wheeler registrations by Nov 28 as compared to 10,579 registrations by Hero Vida during the same period. Ola Electric’s fall from being the leading e2w brand in India for several months to being pushed to fifth spot is quite a tale in itself. Just so you know, It is the only company that retails electric motorcycles too, as all the mainstream brands are yet to enter this segment. Despite this first-mover advantage, it has lost ground in the past few months due to internal conflicts, rising complaints and a flurry of resignations.

Contrary to its rapid expansion of electric scooter portfolio, the brand is taking a calculated step-by-step approach with the electric motorcycle portfolio, said Bhavish Aggarwal – Chairman and Managing Director, during an earnings call. He further added that after burning cash for the last few years, Ola is now prioritising profitability.

“This is a four-year-old company, so when we grew like crazy, we did overbuild some organisations because that’s the way how to manage crazy growth. You cannot have growth, profitability, and consolidation, cost consolidation all at the same time. But we have used the last six months to really consolidate our costs, including in people,” said Aggarwal.
Ola Electric recently introduced its self-developed 4680 Bharat Cell powered vehicles. The S1 Pro+ 5.2 kWh was the first company model to be equipped with the indigenously manufactured 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack which is claimed to deliver performance, higher range and increased safety. These cells are locally developed at the brand’s GigaFactory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.

Presently, Ola Electric has the widest electric scooter portfolio in the Indian market. It retails S1 Pro+ in 5.2 kWh, and 4 kWh configurations, and S1 Pro in 4 kWh, and 3 kWh configurations. Furthermore, the mass-market budget-friendly Gen 3 S1 X+ is sold with a 4 kWh battery pack while the Gen 3 S1 X comes with a choice of three battery options namely 2 kWh, 3 kWh, and 4 kWh.
