K&N Air Filters For Your Motorcycle

The name K&N Filters has long been standing for one of the best air filters for automobiles known to man. It’s made of high quality; it improves performance while at the same time increases engine efficiency. How does it work? Read on as we find out.

KN_Air_FilterHow It Works: Factory fitted air-filters are designed in a way that filters maximum possible dirt particles from the air before in enters the engine, the main drawback here is the factory fitted air filters restrict air flow to the engine because of its high filtration capacity and thickness. Here is where the K&N fills the gap, It provides the ideal balance of filtration and air flow, the end result being better engine performance and efficiency, one might wonder if this increase in air flow would sacrifice air filtration. It doesn’t. The secret of the K&N filter is in its material, if you have seen one, you would know that it’s made of something different.

We managed to contact Cynthia Wert, who is the International Account Manager for K&N Engineering Inc, this is what she had to say on the filtration capabilities of the K&N air filter.

“The filter is meant to separate dirt and dust particles, and not air molecules, which get suspended in the air, range in size from 5-120 microns (some larger, some smaller), which would cause premature wear, damage, or catastrophic failure to an internal combustion engine, if ingested. The largest of the molecules we are discussing are Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O). A CO2 molecule has an average width of 3.42 Angstrom, and an H2O molecule has an average width of 2.11 Angstrom. A CO2 particle measuring 3.42 Angstrom across is equivalent to 0.000342 microns, and an H2O particle would be 0.000211 microns. For comparison, ISO Test Dust, which we use to test our air filters, is made up of a distribution of different size particles, of which the smallest are 1-5 microns. Nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere are diatomic (N2) and have an average width of 2.20 Angstrom, or 0.000220 microns.”

In short K&N filters would do a better job in filtration that the factory fitted one, eliminating the drawbacks of the same. If you’re planning to purchase a K&N, be sure to go with an authentic one, here is how you verify the authenticity as mentioned by by George Hsieh from the K&N Tech Support: Every K&N air filter has 1 or 2, 6 digit mould number on the rubber base or top of the air filter. This will tell you whether the filter is authentic.

Owning a K&N; Care and Maintenance: Cleaning a K&N is very simple. For cleaning there are no kilometer intervals. But in general, the company recommends cleaning the filters every 40,000 kms, cleaning is also advised based on visual inspection. Every K&N has a cotton mesh as well as wire mesh. As per company recommendation, if the wire mesh is not visible then is the time for cleaning. The company also provides special cleaning kit which includes a cleaning solution (solvent) and an oil. Any other oil is not recommended for K&N and the same goes for cleaning liquids or agents.

Here is the procedure of cleaning the filter.

  • Step 1. Remove the filter from carburettor or air box.
  • Step 2. Spray the given solution on filter surface from inner side and outer side.
  • Step 3. Keep the filter untouched till maximum 10 minutes.
  • Step 4. Wash the filter in plain water without pressure. (Small quantity of Liquid Soap is permissible for washing, then apply plain regular water to clean and remove the soapy water)
  • Step 5. If there is any dirt remaining on the filter body then repeat the step 2.
  • Step 6. After washing the filter in the water keep the filter for drying. Natural drying is advisable for K&N filters to avoid the damages. (Do not use compressed air, that will damage the cotton mesh)
  • Step 7. Before applying oil, make sure the filter is completely dry. After drying the filter, apply the given K&N oil on outer surface. Do not use the oil from inner side.
  • Step 8. Refit the filter.

Ready to use. Enjoy the Performance.

What about warranty? Most manufacturers will take pleasure in voiding your warranty. Best to uninstall when you go for service. And in the rains what happens?

Hmmm was waiting for some info on K&n filters buddy…. Thanks. I have few questions though.

-Will the mileage drop if we replce the old one with k&n?

-And by how many bhp wil the power increase for an average 150 cc bike?

-And is the racing kit available for tha apache RTR 160 and where can 1 get it from?

Thanks for asking this question motorbeam.com. If the vehicle is in warranty then it is definitely violation in warranty. As per K&N company there is no voilation because there will be no change in the vehicle. But our all Indian companies will break the warranty period because they want reason. And secondly the K&N system is good for performance oriented machines. So definitely any performance machine is breaking all the rules. So as you said it is best to remove K&N before rider goes for his or her warranty service.

Dear Anand,
The BHP change will be there but since we don’t have chassis dyno. So giving any result may be fake statement. So telling about BHP is not possible.Mileage will not drop but yes it will if you do the upjetting. After installation of any performance filters upjetting or remapping is must for power. Basically all these filters are high performance related rather than for any commuter. So any high performance oriented moto never gives great mileage but it give high power. There is no racing kit available for RTR. So you will have to get it done from any skilled person.

Thank you. Tanmay.

Dear Chinmay,

Thanks for wonderful information, I am regular reader of your article and very time I learn a lot from your article. I would like to know …
1) Which model K&N filter is good for R15?
2) Will it fix for permanently or temporary, I mean, If I install a K&N filter for my new bike and I remove at the time of service (without knowing service guys). Will it work (so that doesn’t void my new bike warranty)

Thanks in Advance.

So if we don do upjetting wil there be any prob or wear n tear of d engine in d long run???? I mean d low fuel n high air mixture is there any prob

Jiten,
1) If there is no budget issue then you can go for R1100 K&N induction filter or else you can go for RC1060 or R1060, both are almost same n good in perormance.
2) You can fix it permanantly directly on intake manifold if you want temporary then go for stock replacement K&N but the cost will be high and less performance than induction type. All the companies are always behind breaking the warranty by pointing out. Basically K&N don’t woid warranty. Yamaha is more sensetive about warranty issue. So careful with it.

Gopal
Up-jetting is for Midrange as well as highrange power if you change the main jet. The pilot circuit works for low end and starting the machine.. So the toal equation is pilot jet for 1/4 throttle & main jet for 3/4 throttle. So there are two circuits in the carburetor. One for low rpm and another for high rpm. But there is one more circuit works at mid range. That is mixture of pilot and main jet circuit.

The low end can adjust by changing the AF settings. Which should be synch’ed with higher size Main jet. Coz since it is very hard to get pilot jet with higher size, so the best option is to go for better tunning & synchornisation. Mixture should be either perfect or rich but not lean for sure. In rich mixture at the most bike will flood but will never heat. The proper AF or rich mixture cools the piston crown. The lean makes hot crown. So we can say petrol is also act like coolant for engine.

Lean mixture always cause lot of problem.
1. Engine Starving.
2. Over Heating.
3. Power Loss.
4. Mileage problem.

Feel free to ask these kind of question from our FAQ option so everyone will get to know from single article.

Dear Neel,
Let me inform you about any performance oriented spares.
1. If you are going for induction type filter for pulsar then don’t think about mileage.
2. If you are going for stock replacement filter then there will be no great change in mileage. But it will not drop either.
3.Any performance spares are generally related to high revs.
4. If you are planning to buy K&N but not for high performance. Then you can buy stock replacement. Some people buy stock replacement filters to avoid every time change. Because K&N works for life long. So you don’t need to change the filter often.
5. Filter cost would be near to 1800Rs. for RC1060. If you are planing to buy R1060 then the cost is bit less. But if you want to go for R1100 then cost is near to 2400Rs.
6. After installing any performance filter you must retune the carburetor for proper ratio. Or else carburetor will make lean mixture of AF, which is bad for engine.

13 Chinmay Dangre August 23, 2009 at 8:10 am

One more thing Neel, If you are mileage oriented rider then I suggest stick to Stock filter. Don’t go for any other change. Infact for more better mileage you can put NGK IR plug. These plugs are very good for high performance and also for mileage due to it’s high resistance capacity to burn the fuel. Conventional plugs fails to burn AF in the chamber. These plugs can’t burn 100% AF. So best is NGK.

Chinmay,
Whenever you upgrade to a pod style filter on a motorcycle, you’d have to re-jet your carburetor. Since there is more air flow into the carburetor, you’ll have to go with larger jet to provide more fuel to compensate.
At this time, I would recommend having an experienced tuner tune the carburetor for you to avoid leaning the engine out.

TBTW with R1100, the stock must be 110 or 115. SO you can go till 125 to 130 for MJ. For Pilot I can’t suggest you any thing because I don’t have them either.

Hi there,
help needed!!!!!
i hav installed k&n RC1060 on my pulsar 150(i was forced to)
because i fitted a unicorn mono suspension,so there was no space for stock air filter.
now,i have not modified the carburettor, there is no mechanic in my area who knows such things
due to lean mixture i m getting low pickup, overheating etc
i wil have to modify the carb myself, can you please tell me the exact procedure??what new parts i need for jetting??i know mileage will be comprmised but thats ok….
can u please mail me,or shall i check this thread again??
nd yes my pulsar is 4 years old(k&n was installed recently)

Dear Nirav,
since it’s a 4yr old moto, I suggest first check some of the spares before installing any performance filters.

1. Cam
2. Spark Plug
3. Clutch Plates
4. Friction Plates
5. Chain Sprocket
6. Valve Clearance Setting
7. Timing Chain
8. Timing Chain pads
9. Wheel bearings
10. Sprocket Bearing
11. Block Piston n Rings for proepr clearance.
12. Carburetor condition.
13. Rubber Pipes
etc…. etc…..
First get it checked by Service Center. Then Check the oil condition. Try to get better quality oil grade before u start pepping ur machine. Then switch to upjetting. Till that I suggest don’t go for any thing….

23 nirav6369 September 10, 2009 at 2:35 am

i recently serviced my bike@bajaj,also changed the oil,& other things i shall get checked….(i m not facing any serious probs at present, but i fear i will as i have read everywhere on the net)
but as for now i have mentioned that i have already fitted the new filter as i cannot fit the stock one(the mono suspension comes in its way, only conical k&n does fits).
so i think the engine is being deteriorated.
do you mean that fitting k&n without upjetting is ok??
i m already getting low pickup(wheelie, burnout is not possible, which i used to do before)
what i want to know is does the main jet of pulsar 180 carby fit in 150??what points should be kept in mind for doing so(if possible)
i hope u are getting what i mean…….

Reply

24 Chinmay September 11, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Yes. 180cc Main jet , pilot jet can be fitted in 150cc but no use bcoz of hardley diff. in jet size. After fitting any performance filter you will have to check for lag. IF the bike starts Lagging then u need to upjet till that point where lagging disappears. After that step you should check the exhaust tip for hot or cold gas. If you feel hot gas from silencer at idle then step up the jet size. Means lean mixture should not kill the bike. So by upjetting one more step you will get proper mixture and performance too….

Reply

25 nirav6369 September 12, 2009 at 2:01 am

thanks a lot for the reply…..
but still i am confused about how to find if my bike is lagging?and if lag is there then how to setup the jet size?(how to upjet step by step?)
someone suggested me that simply by replacing the main jet by 180′s would automatically upjet the carburettor…..is it so?
if not then how to upjet for the perfect airfuel ratio?

@ Nirav
high range meams high RPM that means the bike will show you coughing sound. After upjetting the coughing will go. But u will have to find exact jet size where it will be smooth. If the stock is 110 or 115 then start increasing by 0.05 size for example 115 <120 <125 etc… Every after change in jet you will have to retune the carb for better mixture. Make sure it is not lean or rich. Well to find that mixture u will have to check the exaust tip for hot or cold gas. Once u feel cold gas at idle ur almost perfect.if u have AFR meter then nothing like it. Or you can go to the person who has got PUC machine, modern machine has many options in which u can see AFR either so that way you can mixt AFR perfectly. Make sure the AFR is near to 14.7. I am making my own AFR meter soon will take test of it…

so how will i be able to increase the jet size in steps with a diff of 0.05 everytime?is there any provision for size adjustment of the jet?
you also said that fitting pulsar 180′s jet would not make any difference, then any other bike’s?

as i have mentioned that i have fitted unicorn’s mono suspension and also unicorn’s fork arm(the u-shaped rod on which the mono’s lower part fits).so whats the size of the broadest tyre i can fit?which company do you suggest for maximum speed and nice grip?
also due to this modification the rear end of the bike has become very jumpy, even on soft setting.Any solution?

some of the bike need small intake or long intake. Since change in sound is very much normal. Just make sure you have fitted crank breather and emission filters too. If not then do that at first place, coz if no cranks breather filter means that will ruin the engine.

In induction system the sound will be diff. so thats not a problem or so, if you are thinking about it. Fitting K&N in air box means restriction on air. About the heat then please up-jet the carb. lack of fuel is cozing heat.

guys most of you must be illiterate about pipercross air filters, and thats the reason for you opting for the k n n air filters.
pipercross ait filters are the best air filters for most of the indian bikes.
these are sponge air filters which are imported straight from england. these are extremely easy to maintain also. All what we have to do to clean these air filters is to remove them and put them under hot- running water. they enhance the top speed impressively.
talking about k n n air filters, they just help us with the acceleration that too till the speed of 40 kmph or 60 kmph. if they can increase the bike’s speed by 2kmph then pipercross can increase the top speed by 5kmph.
so i advice one should go for pipercross air filters for the following reasons-
1> it gives better filtered air to engine
2> it increases the performance
3> it is easy to maintain
4> it comes for the same price of that of the k n n air filters( Rs 1650)

hey siddhu. I think after installing k&n your air fuel ratio is set towards too lean or too rich side(most probably leaner side) just follow the instruction on this page if you can by yourself http://bikeadvice.in/tuning-carburetor-optimal-performance-fuel-efficiency/

@Ramki: regarding rejetting find a skilled mechanic nearby or contact the one who installed K&N for your bike. He may do rejetting for you and the cost is about 400(don’t know the exact value). But if you feel like doing yourself then this is the guide. http://bikeadvice.in/fit-kn-filter-rejet-carburetor/

I’d never ever recommend the K&N R-1100 for the royal enfield because it just messes up the air:fuel to an unbelievably horrid degree. The bike loses power to climb hills even with a 100 main-jet it just sucks.
I can’t say about R-1050 but generally speaking these filters function best on liquid cooled bikes because raising the air:fuel also heats up the engine a lot more and it’s just not great for an air cooled bike engine made of material that is not the best heat exchanger…I can’t say but maybe it will work well with the UCE-Classic-500.

1: do i need to remove my air box or do i need to cut and leave it open from the side? Or i need to cover back the air box cover?
2: do i need to re route the air breather from the crank case if i remove or cut the air box?…. if yes what is the option and how to do it?
3: does cv carburator really can take the load from the air intake from knn filter?
4: can the diaphrgm last longer? .. even when using stock carb, the diaphrgm get spoiled easily.

Bikes less than 160CC go for R/RC 1060, bikes greater than 160 CC go for 1100.
You have to upjett your Crab, if u go for K&n…
Adding K&n filter will allow ur bike to breathe more, but the fuel to air ratio will not be corrected untill and unless u do upjetting.

Upjetting will definately lower your mileage, as it allows more fuel to go into ur engine.

Once you do both your bike will accelerate more by 8-15 kmp

For smooth roar you need to install aftermarket free flow exhaust. But I do not advice fitting any exhaust which isn’t made for Karizma ZMR.

Hi, I own a Bajaj Pulsar 180cc DTSI 2008 model complete black version. I have installed a K&N R-1100 with a help of a plastic pipe to the filter as the 180 carbs are smaller. I have not done jetting to my carbs. I’m having problems with mileage, acceleration block, engine heating & pick up problem. If i have to get the jetting done what size jetting has to be done ? I do not want my mileage to drop down too much. So can you please suggest the correct installation of K&N R-1100 on my Pulsar 180cc 2008 model, what size jetting has to be done and how ? Thank you so much I’ll be waiting for your reply.

Hello Mr. Chinmay. Do I get K & N filter for Yamaha Fazer 150cc. What is the cost & where can i get it in Hubli or in Bangalore. Please give me shop address. What else should be done after installing K & N filter as i am doing it to increase the power and not mileage.
With the stock air filter fazer gives about 14 bhp, so after installing K & N filter how much bhp will be increased in my bike.
Please send the reply to my email id if possible:
fmustang30@yahoo.in
Thank You.
