Honda Launches 150cc CB Unicorn Dazzler

by Deepak on May 13, 2010

It’s raining new models this summer. After a breath taking launch by Bajaj, here come the masters of the game, HMSI. Honda has unveiled their much touted and long awaited upgrade of Unicorn which is called as CB Unicorn Dazzler. As we reported earlier, much of the specs remain similar just that the engine has been tuned for slight better performance. Dazzler would form a new part of Honda’s stables in India and would continue to co-exist with Unicorn along with Hunk and CBZ Extreme from sister concern Hero Honda which use the same engine.

Honda has tried to woo the premium cadre of younger customers from the 150cc segment which fall above the regular 150cc offerings and below Yamaha’s super scintillating FZ series. The ex showroom Delhi price tag of Rs 62,900 proves the just said statement. Huge tank shrouds, aggressive front bikini fairing, lovely flowing lines make this bike a treat to look at.

Without faltering on the basics, Honda has loaded this bike with a cute looking digital speedo console, tubeless fatter tires, much needed power bump and an optional rear disc brake.

We enlist all the features and changes from the existing version of Unicorn:

  1. More Power Output: The 150cc engine now churns out 14 Bhp of max power (in line with Hero Honda CBZ Extreme and Hunk)
  2. Aggressive Styling: The bike has been endowed with some blistering looks to go along with that ultra refined motor
  3. 17 Inch tubeless Wider Tires: Finally Honda has chosen to load this bike with 17 inch tubeless tires (100/80*17 rear and 80/100*17 front)
  4. Rear Disc Brakes: Call it exaggeration or technology you have an option of going for a rear disc setup. Front 240mm rotor comes standard
  5. Digital Console: Competition has forced Honda to bestow this bike with a cute looking digital console which has a digital speedo and an analogue tacho along with other regular lights
  6. Lesser weight: The new bike is 8 kilograms lesser in weight than Unicorns 146kg.
  7. Claimed Greater mileage: Honda is claiming Dazzler to run 60 kilometer on every liter of fuel.
  8. Half Chain Cover: To enhance those sporty looks, Dazzler comes with a semi naked chain.
  9. Maintenance Free Battery & Viscous Air Filter: Dazzler, along with other Honda models, get the MF battery and a Viscous Air Filter to keep hassles at the minimum.
  10. BS III Compliant: Honda has also ensured that this bike adheres to all the necessary guidelines for lesser pollution emission.
  11. Four Color Options: Armour Gold Metallic, Sword Silver Metallic, Pearl Siena Red and Pearl Nightstar Black
  12. Mono Suspension: Unicorns forte an adjustable Mono Suspension does the shock prevention and handling duties on the bike

Dazzler will be available by the end of May to all those who are interested. Honda plans to sell around 1,20,000 units from their existing Unicorn and the new Dazzler for this year. With the motorcycling market becoming competitive every day, it remains to be seen how many go bedazzled by the dazzle of this bike!

Goood move bye honda. Specially when most of the youngsters want the unicorn due to its engine, its looks tries to resist them. Now customer will get best of both world. New competition for Yamaha FZ & Pulsars.

suraj May 13, 2010 at 11:17 am

Honda has done the homework quite well and I am sure that there is no competition left now in 150cc segment whether its GS150R or FZ series or Gulsars. :D

madhu May 13, 2010 at 12:04 pm

Good news from honda

But it can’t even come closer to FZ on styling part

Digital speedo smaller and doesn’t looks impressive and smarter like the one in GS150R

Yes its weight is lesser than unicorn aka CB Unicorn but the milage is also lessermax 60 (under test condition :-) )

coz they fine tuned it to compete with FZ not milage

And honda knows it will burn their fingers if they discontinueed the existing model unicorn hence both should co-exist to keep smiles

Dear All,

It’s Clear Honda following Bajaj Now. First we have seen 17inch tyre on Honda cb twister and Now on Honda CB Dazzler. Oner more thing lesser kerb weight by using plastic parts rather than metal which reduce cost of manufacturing.

Thanks,

Thats a Great Comeback for Honda, The Speedo is really awesome, (But looks like it was directly smuggled from 2006 R1).

Guys the front looks are impressive just like cb twister but the rear looks aren’t upto the mark ,it is killing the entire visual appearance of the bike and moreover this bike is not as good looking as yamaha fz or neither doesnt carry the majestic looks like gs150r.Honda should have concentrated more on rear designing

i think its a sensible move from honda to give new exterior and tried and trusted tweaked honda. But even though i feel honda is unable to make excitment with this launch as it made by cb twister.

I think if honda would have tweaked this engine at full and launch something bigger CBF then it would be more helpful for honda.

and on the other hand when they added CB with unicorn that time only they should give good makeover to unicorn.

The upgrade that was needed was in the looks department by the Honda Unicorn Dazzler and that’s what we got, but I think that Honda went wrong with keeping the power at Just 14 bhp.I think that Honda should have given it at least 15.5 to 16 bhp to this bike because it would not only eat into the market of the Yamaha FZ,GS150R but also eat into the market of the TVS Apache 180, Pulsar 180,220 and the R15 to some extent.Considering the weight which is reduced by 8 kg it would be very fast but also fuel efficient.I know there is no clip-on handle bars and fuel injection but we can forgive Honda for that if the had increased the power a bit more than they did, they would have had a Winner on their hands.

The Honda Dazzler’s Wheelbase is similar in camparison to Hero Honda Hunk , just few mm more. Honda, bajaj all have common just combination n permutation. We need different and original……Honda

the console just rocks but the specs are boring , also the seating posture would be unsporty ( upright ) , because of the forward rear pegs .

Hi, guys, have to tell you one thing:

I went to the Honda dealer to buy CB Unicorn 150cc on 14-May-2010, the same day that Unicorn’s new avatar Dazzler was launched.

They had displayed a black Dazzler in the showroom, and at the very first look I thought it was the ugliest bike in India.

Guess what? I went ahead and booked the good old vanilla CB Unicorn. It looks much better and self-assured.

Comparison of Dazzler and old Unicorn:
======================================

1.) The front head lamp of Dazzler is the ugliest of all bikes! Old Unicorn is much beautiful. Ditto for the rear lamp.

2.) The side cowls attached to the fuel tank is made of cheap plastic. It looks very ugly, just like Hero Honda Hunk. Old Unicorn has a very elegant looking fuel tank.

Also, the main fuel tank of Dazzler is the ugliest of all bikes – it is so narrow like a dog’s back.

3.) The LCD speedo console in Dazzler is the ugliest of all bikes. Don’t believe me? Go check out yourself! I personally prefer the meter console of old Unicorn. Simple, sturdy and effective.

4.) The rear tyres of Dazzler are more thicker. Well, who cares? Unicorn is not about sport, but power commuting. In any case, Dazzler with Unicorn engine does not have the firepower to utilize those tyres. Instead, Dazzler’s mileage may drop because of the thicker tyres. Useless addition!

5.) Dazzler has rear disc brake. Again, who cares? You will not appreciate the disc brake if the bike is as ugly as Dazzler is!

6.) The drive chain is uncovered (Horror of Horrors!) For a bike that is inheriting most of Unicorn, how can they compromise on reliability?
Old unicorn with covered chain is more appropriate.

7.) Seating posture and engine pickup of Dazzler is exactly like Unicorn.

========================

Conclusion: Honda should have introduced a real sporty 150cc bike. Instead it has copied and destroyed Unicorn’s legacy with this stupid Dazzler.

My advice: Stay clear of this non-sense pretender called Dazzler. If you want a sports bike, buy Apache or CBZ Extreme. But if you like commuter bike, choose between good old Unicorn and GS150R.

Let me tell you Savrav Dazzler is Sprots Bike (Future Bike) and about Lod unicorn is traditional bike, this bike for 35 to 45 age group, Dazzler is like Katrina boss.
Old Unicormn is like Sridevi got my point.

Honda should have added a few more power(15.5 bhp) just like what bajaj has done to all of its old pulsors by adding an extra 1 bhp, majestic looks, and superb rear designing to compete with great 150cc commuter bikes like gs 150r and older version of unicorn ,anyways i am quite disappointed with this new unicorn in terms of 3 departments what i ve mentioned earlier

Reply

Arun May 17, 2010 at 8:21 pm

I think this new version doesnt even come close to the sales of other 150cc bikes like yamaha fz,gs 150r(gradually getting glittered in sales),older version of unicorn, cbz extreme,hh hunk and tvs apache and with a price tag of rs.75000 this bike is not worth the buy.

Reply

Adi May 17, 2010 at 8:28 pm

i can say there is not much about the console it is ok not gr8 check out the bike and you will see the console is too tiny to be true. The side cowls are indeed more of same quality as hunk the rear except the Tyres didn’t excite me that much the rear tails also look somewhat similar to Hunk. The bike lacks Engine kill switch and Yes waiting time is around 30 days for this.

But i will not say this is a bad bike but ok but after so many years of Unicorn era Honda could have done better if they had increased the Power this would have been a menace to so many bikes.

Also i also prefer the Old Uni to this.Yet to test ride this but some people have and have said not as smooth in gears as uni but handling is good.

Reply

Adi May 17, 2010 at 8:29 pm

And also the bike is not that good from front Twister looks much much better

Reply

arun May 19, 2010 at 6:25 pm

The digital console is not as good looking as gs150r,honda guys should have done something better i mean for a price tag of above 70,000 they should give the best digital console and the rear looks are not at all good it is killing the entire look of the bike.

Two weeler manufacturer except yamaha are all going for the copy of the others product. Now Honda has done it for the competition of Yamaha’s F16,FZ,And Fs series losing its own style of Honda unicorn. The Honda unicorn had its own chrming design, now it vanished. It shound have upgraded in the same style. Now people will go for YAMAHA only. The CB honda unicorn looks like yamaha’s F series. But still the engine sound everrything yamaha is better.Except mileage But the Honda will lose the customers who like old HONDA UNICON at its charming design.CB unicorn looks like a larfer version of CB twister which is not attracted by many.

I am in not any sort of confusion regarding waiting for my cb unicorn one month more..coz I will be a proud wing rider atleast after one month.
note: there is no waiting than one week for dazzler. its upto u to decide…

Hello friends,

Thanks for the information about the Honda dazzler, i desided to take dazzler but i am having some common doubt !!!!.
1.) Is there any space below the seat like honda shine and hero honda hunk to keep some small things?????????
2.) Is there a pass light in honda dazzler like CBZ at front side of the handle bar,(Because in picture switches are not there)
3.) Is there a LOW BEAM and HIGH BEAM switch in honda dazzler,(Switch is not there in pictures)
4.) Is it able to fix additional horns and lights (Because battery power is only 4 Amps),
5.) Is there any problem with self start,
6.) Is there any problem in cold start,
7.) If battery is low self start and meters wont work, but But bike is started in some other methods will the head light and turning lights work in that condition??????,
8.) If battery is fully drain ,But bike is started in some other methods the battery is getting charged or not??????? will it work for next time ??????
9.) Is it able to fix security system like other bikes because battery is (4 Amps) and will it give long life if security system is ON for one week????
these are the common doubts for me while think practically because every one will think about the above issues befor taking the bike,So kindly give the clear information about there points

Reply

Sam January 18, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Hi ,

thanks karthik, i am also having the same doubts about the battery problem
Atleast battery should withstand for one week if security controller is on .
In case of full battery drain bikes can be started, but after that the battery will it charged automatically ?and bike will start in self next time or not??,
even the battery is drain head ,tail and turning lamps will it work are not?

Hi Friend,

I am quiet confused to buy a bike, first i choose cb unicorn then there is sortage of production and honda launch of cb unicorn dazzler. I very much like that bike to purchase it, but reading above comment i am very much confused whether to buy cb unicorn dazzler of not. People telling much of parts of dazzler have consist of plastic, so it reduce the value of bike. please suggest which is bike i have to purchase.

My choice is Cb Unicorn, Gs150r, and dazzler

please advice which is the best for me.

hi Mohammed,
Honda Cb unicorn dazzler is best bike in 150cc segment. Excellent power (14 bhp), performance is good, mileage is also very good……B’cuz, this is only one bike (in 150cc)to give’s 50 to 55 mileage. it is superub………bike…….Don’t confused…..ok……

Thank you.

Reply

Antony February 2, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Compared to old unicorn, dazzler is much smaller in size.
Size – gone
Highway stability – gone
build quality – gone – not as strongly built like fz16, unicorn, gs150r, or Apache.
no kicker, so reliability – gone
style – not impressive. In fact, many think it is twister.
half chain cover and no proper saree guard – so not for executives/family. They should give both half and full chain cover option. Let customers chose whatever chain cover they want.
No clip-on handles and front-placed footpeg – so not sporty
digital speedo – very small

Fz16 is also light weight, but it still gives impression of big bike. But dazzler looks and feels like small bike. The only selling point of dazzler is reduced weight and rear disk brake.

If Gs150r and old unicorn come with rear disk brake, then only few will buy dazzler.

Dear Sir,

I am Tousef an Commerce graduate working as customer representative in chennai. Recently I bought Honda – CB Twister from vellore districe on 3-August 2010. The gear-shaft transmission system is so defect that I could not ride the bike peacefully. I have explained the issue based on my engineering knowledge as below.

Issue:
The gear got totally disengaged with shaft while on 2nd to 3rd or 3th to 4th gear vice versa. The cause could be a ‘least rpm value mismatch’ with respective gear. The result is very dangerous that speed got reduced and bike stops immediately with heavy noise and creating panic situation.

At Service Centre:
The above mentioned issue is reported to the service centre – Selvam Honda Vellore on 1st service. I have explained the issue clearly, but the action/work taken by technician/service engineer are really disappointing.

Take1: The chain was made tight such that it would solve the problem. Believing them, I had taken test drive with service engineer along with me. The problem was not solved and I had demonstrated to the Service Engineer.

Take2: Service Engineer as a try of luck ( !!??), he had changed the swindle, suspecting the swindle could be defective. Again I had test drive with same service engineer and same problem re-occurred.

So trusting the job is done, taken the bike away to home. And from next day onwards the problem is re-occurring and occurring till now. It clearly shows none of the technician had not analyzed the cause and nothing resolved.

Practical Situation
I would request Honda to think of a practical situation like a drive on a traffic road, where in mistakenly you shifted wrong gear that slightly mismatches with rpm, the result is bike stops, heavy noise, total mess up and panic etc. Please note that I have tested my friend’s Shine, which has no problem with gear engagement etc.

Resolution:
It is not even possible to live with above issue and ride my bike throughout my life. I got depressed of using this new bike of just one month old. Based on above experience and details, it clearly shows its some manufacturing defect, hence I would request Honda to replace the vehicle totally. Please consider this at highest priority and provide me new vehicle.

Thanks for your understanding
Tousef
