The R2 sits above the R15 with a new 204 cc engine, an all-new chassis, and a kerb weight of just 149 kg
Yamaha has finally added a new member to its R-series family in India with the launch of the YZF-R2. Priced from Rs 2.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the R2 sits above the R15 but is not intended to replace it. India is also the first market to get the new motorcycle, which marks Yamaha’s entry into the 200cc segment.
1. It Gets A New 204cc Engine
The biggest change over the R15 is, naturally, the engine. The R2 uses a 204 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder motor producing 26.5 hp at 10,000rpm and 19.1 Nm at 8,000rpm. It gets a DOHC setup rather than the R15’s SOHC arrangement and, interestingly, doesn’t use Yamaha’s VVA technology. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox. The most notable difference is that this engine has been built from scratch and does not share anything with the R15.
2. Lightweight Is The Big USP
Yamaha has clearly focused on keeping the R2 light. The motorcycle uses an all-new steel diamond-type frame weighing 14kg, and the base version tips the scales at just 149 kg. The higher variants weigh 150 kg. That makes the R2 one of the lightest motorcycles in this part of the market, and the low weight should help it feel considerably more agile than the numbers on the spec sheet suggest.
3. Yamaha Hasn’t Cut Corners On Hardware
Despite being positioned as an entry-level supersport, the R2 gets some serious hardware. All versions get a 37 mm USD front fork, rear linkage monoshock, dual-channel ABS, traction control, three riding modes and a 5-inch TFT display. The motorcycle also gets an assist and slipper clutch. The top-spec R2 M goes a step further with adjustable front suspension and additional premium touches.
4. Variants
Yamaha is offering the R2 in three variants. The base version costs Rs 2.30 lakh, while the version with a quickshifter is priced at Rs 2.39 lakh. The range-topping R2 M costs Rs 2.53 lakh, all ex-showroom Delhi. The bikes are offered in five colours, although the options vary depending on the variant.
5. It Sits In A Sweet Spot Above The R15
The R2 has been designed as the motorcycle for riders who have outgrown the R15 but don’t necessarily want to jump straight into a much larger and heavier machine. It will take on the likes of the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR, while the R15 will continue alongside it. Deliveries of the R2 are scheduled to begin from mid-September 2026.
The R2 is interesting because Yamaha hasn’t simply made the R15 bigger and called it a day. It has developed a new engine, a new chassis and focused heavily on weight. At 149 kg with 26.5 hp, the power-to-weight ratio is particularly promising. Whether it can justify the jump from the R15 will depend on how that new combination feels on the road, but on paper, Yamaha has certainly created a rather tasty little supersport.
