Yamaha R2 India Launch Confirmed, Trademark Filed

Yamaha has trademarked the ‘YZF-R2’ name in India, which suggests that a new fully-faired sportsbike will be launched soon in the country

Yamaha has filed a trademark for ‘YZF-R2’ moniker in the Indian market, dropping a subtle hint that it is planning to launch a 200cc fully-faired sportsbike in the country. To be positioned between the R15 and R3 in India, it will be up against the likes of KTM RC200 and Hero Karizma XMR. However, a few sections of the media are reporting that Yamaha R2 will replace the R15 in the domestic market. But, we do not think so as the R15 has its own fan base and it has emerged as a successful model over the years.

Design-wise, Yamaha R2 is likely to be pretty identical to the other superports motorcycle in the Japanese brand’s portfolio. The muscular fairing will be complemented by several premium styling elements, including a twin headlamp setup, LED DRLs, sculpted fuel tank, upswept exhaust pipe and split seats. It will have a committed riding position.

The upcoming Yamaha R2 is expected to come with advanced connectivity and safety features. It could get a fully-coloured TFT instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation. The YZF-R2 might also be offered with multiple ride modes, quickshifter, USB charging slot, dual-channel ABS, assist and slipper clutch and traction control system.

The R2 could be fitted with 17-inch front and rear wheels while the suspension duties are likely to be performed by USD front forks and monoshock rear unit. It could be packed with disc brakes at both the ends. The fully-faired sportsbike could be launched in India by the end of 2026 or early 2027 at a starting price of around Rs 2 lakh (ex-showroom).

At the heart, it could house a bigger version of the existing 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. In its current tune, this engine develops top power of 18.1 bhp and peak torque of 14.2 Nm. However, with a displacement of 200cc, the power output and torque delivery could go up to 24.6 bhp and 19 Nm. It will be linked to a 6-speed gearbox.

Recently, Yamaha had confirmed that it will launch 10 all-new models in India by the end of 2026 and no prizes for guessing that the R2 could be one of them. The company had also announced that it will introduce 20+ facelifted models of its existing two-wheeler range by 2026 end in India. So, expect a fury of launches from the Japanese brand in the next few months.
