Yamaha R2 Annual Sales Target Revealed, Details Inside

Yamaha R2 has been positioned in the highly competitive 200cc segment of motorcycles where it lock horns with KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR 210

Just a couple of days back, Yamaha India launched the all-new R2 fully-faired sportsbike in the Indian market at an introductory price of Rs 2.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) in the country. Positioned above the R15 line-up, it was presented with a new 204cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled fuel-injected engine. Needless to mention, Yamaha R2 will be developed at brand’s factory in Chennai while sold in the domestic market as well as shipped to global markets. Now, the Japanese brand has set an annual sales target of 50,000 units for the R2 in India.

The annual sales target of 50k units roughly translates into monthly sales of over 4,000 motorcycles across the country. The R2 is expected to contribute 18 percent in the company’s overall retail volumes by the end of this year. The deliveries of the R2 will start from mid-Sep 2026 in the local market while exports are likely to commence at a later stage.

The premium motorcycles accounted for one-third of Yamaha’s sales in the first half of CY 2026. The R2 is the most premium and feature-packed model from the brand as it comes loaded with 17-inch wheels, Traction Control System (TCS), Assist & Slipper Clutch, Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) with ride modes (Street, Sport and Rain), 37 mm upside-down (USD) front forks, dual-channel ABS, Bi-Directional Quick Shifter, and Adjustable clutch and brake levers.

The premiumisation trend in the motorcycle segment is on the rise with models between 125-250cc engine displacement clocking higher sales volumes than the entry-level commuter models. In case of Yamaha, it posted sales of 4.1 lakh units in the first six months of 2026 with a YoY growth of 41 percent as 2.9 lakh motorcycles were sold during the same period in 2025.

In addition, Yamaha’s premium motorcycle sales outnumbered the overall two-wheeler industry growth in H1 2026, which was at 21 percent with 1.06 crore units. Yamaha grew by nearly twice at 41 percent. Hence, the company has high hopes from the R2 as it is an all-new model and positioned in the 200cc segment which has fewer rivals such as the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR 210.

Yamaha is also working on the expansion of its Blue Square dealership network as several premium models including the R2 are retailed through these showrooms. The company is aiming for 600 outlets by the end of 2026 with a special focus on Tier 1 and Tier cities. On the possibilities of a price hike in future for the R2, Hajime Aota, Chairman of Yamaha Motor India, said “I wish I did not have to do it. But if I am going to sacrifice profitability, I may. That is where we are.”
