Yamaha R15 Ownership Review by Pranjal

Hello bikers! My name is Pranjal, 18 years of age. I am a youngster from Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and I love to explore BikeAdvice.in. I am one of those who visit Bike Advice regularly. Here I am writing a review for you all. I would also like to bring it to your notice that it was Bike Advice that helped me selecting my machine. Well, without wasting any further time I should come to the point.

It all started when I was 7 years of age. I was very passionate about bikes as a child. I still remember that how I used to wake up early in the morning to get a glimpse of Hero Honda Karizma (first sport class bike).

I used to wake up early because the Karizma guy used to leave for his office at around 7 am.

Years later when I turned 17 I asked my mom to get me a bike and she agreed. But it was really tough to make my grandmothers mind as she disliked bikes. She was kind off afraid buying me a bike but later on she said yes. Ok, now I was in a dilemma as to which bike should I choose?

Let me tell you all that I am a big- big fan of Yamaha. Thus, I always wanted to have a product from Yamaha and then I visited the Yamaha showroom and booked Yamaha R15 the very next day as I didn’t had any budget limitations.

Soon I got my machine delivered and I was very much happy. I think the machine is best in class and its wonderful to have something like R15.

As of today, its 7000kms on the odo and I remember every single moment spent with it. This machine is an awesome piece of engineering. I must say that Yamaha is back in business with the launch of bikes like the R15, Fazer and FZ16. And yeah R15 is the most technically advanced machine of the lot and I love it from the core of my heart 🙂

Below are the specifications for Yamaha YZF R15:

  • Cylinder arrangement: Single cylinder

  • Maximum power : 17PS / 8,500rpm
  • Maximum torque : 15 N.m / 7,500rpm
  • Transmission type : Return type 6-speed

Engine

Well, it’s a single cylinder 150 cc liquid cooled engine. It is high revving and the real fun begins only after 5,500 RPM. It is very frustrating to drive the R15 in city traffic. Commuters stay away! 150cc fuel injected engine throws some 17PS of raw power to satisfy all your 5 senses.

I never spent anything on the engine. Engine is maintenance free but you are just required to pour some new semi synthetic engine oil and coolant every now and then. As per my view engine is a gem and very reliable. The most advanced engine in India till date

Engine noise

Engine is surrounded by a water jacket (liquid cooling) which not only cools it but also reduces the engine noise.

The engine is rather silent when compared to other bikes as you do not require any opposite flow of air to cool down the engine.

Gear Box

We get a 6 speed transmission and a single lever shifter. Gear shifting is very smooth especially at high speeds.

Looks

It looks a lot like the 2008 Yamaha R1. The R15 was designed in the same designing lab where the legendry R1 was designed! Looks are enough to turn heads.

I personally believe that Yamaha could have done better with the rears but still I get a lot of attention on road. R15 is no doubt the best looking bike on road.

Suspension

Suspension deserves a special note. It is the first time in India we get such a suspension i.e. Monocross suspension which ensures stability cornering at high speeds.

Mileage

It depends upon the riding style. I do manage to get around 35-38 kmpl in city. Frankly speaking, when you get a machine like this, who cares about the mileage?

Handling

when it comes to handling, this bike is fun to ride! Its light weighted and pretty well crafted. Handling is absolutely superb!

You feel very confident on the corners especially at high speeds! I never experienced such handling from any other Indian bike.

Top Speed

I attained a top speed of 134 km/hr on Bhopal-Indore High way. I could have done more I think but there was an uphill 🙁

Price

Roughly around 1,10,000 on road.

Final Words

If you are serious about performance biking, this machine is meant for you. If you are seeking to get your hands on a super bike, this one is the right choice to start with.

I will not suggest this bike for the commuters but then again if you are seeking power with looks this machine is enough to set your soul racing. This awesome machine is going to stay with me forever! YES YAMAHA!

Pranjal
