The range-topping grade in the R15 line-up in India, priced between Rs 1.90-2.01 lakh, could be axed anytime soon due to the arrival of the all-new R2
Yamaha R15 M, the range-topping grade in the fully-faired sportsbike line-up, could be phased out from the Indian market in the coming days. The Japanese brand had recently launched the all-new R2 sportsbike and hence, the streamlining exercise is underway to make space for the newly introduced model. Yamaha has neither confirmed nor denied this development but our dealer sources have spilled the beans regarding the axing of R15 M, which is currently priced at Rs 2.01 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) in India.
However, the base and mid-spec variants of the R15 with/without quickshifter will continue to be on sale in our country. Yamaha R15 M bookings are still being accepted at the company dealerships to clear the limited stock. In addition, the top-end variant in the R15 range is also present on the brand’s official website in India for online orders.
Presently, Yamaha R15 is classified into three categories namely S, V4, and M. The R15 S comes at a fixed price of Rs 1.59 lakh as it misses out on the quickshifter. As for the R15 V4, it is priced between Rs 1.75-1.80 lakh with a few variants available with quickshifter. Last but not the least, the R15 M is sold in a price bracket of Rs 1.90-2.01 lakh. All the prices mentioned before are ex-showroom, Delhi.
On the other hand, Yamaha R2 was launched in India last month in a price range of Rs 2.30-2.53 lakh. Hence, as we can see, there is only a difference of Rs 29,000 between the base R2 and top R15 M variants. Therefore, the company is discontinuing the R15 M grades so that there is ample price gap between the two fully-faired sportsbikes and zero possibilities of cannibalization.
Some of the notable features onboard the Yamaha R2, which are standard across the entire variant line-up, are 17-inch wheels, Traction Control System (TCS), Assist & Slipper Clutch, Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) with ride modes (Street, Sport and Rain), 37 mm upside-down (USD) front forks, and dual-channel ABS. The mid and top variants also boast of a Bi-Directional Quick Shifter.
The range-topping R2M is available with adjustable front suspension, rear shockers, clutch and brake levers. Sitting on a newly developed high-tensile steel tube diamond frame, Yamaha R2 is powered by a 204cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled fuel-injected engine which generates max power of 26.1 bhp and peak torque of 19.1 Nm. The R2 is the lightest motorcycle in its segment with an overall kerb weight of just 149 kg.
