Suzuki Gixxer Cup Round 2 Concludes at MMRT

With motorsports slowly gaining importance in India, manufacturers have been expressing renewed interests in garnering local talent. Suzuki Gixxer Cup is one such example. One of the most affordable racing series, the possibility of reaching the grassroots is pretty high. To take things to the next level they recently kicked off the Red Bull Road to Rookies Cup.

Held at MMRT (Madras Motor Race Track) along with the Gixxer Cup and Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship, the event is essentially a talent hunting platform. It aims to provide young and aspiring Indian racers a launchpad to the international racing arena where 8 riders between the ages of 13 to 16 years participated in 3 races with the more experienced novice riders from the Gixxer Cup.

Suzuki organised a special introduction and orientation workshop for the rookies. This included theory classes, track ride, sighting laps and practice sessions interspersed with feedback sessions from Suzuki’s racing instructors.

The free practice sessions which covered up majority of Thursday saw the newbies acclimatise themselves with the bikes. Older riders got more time to gain better control over the racing machines. The Novice category was won by Amarnath Rajan followed very closely by Antony Peter who was just 7/100th of a second behind. Meka crashed out of the Open race, leaving R Rajinikanth to battle with Vivian Gladwin and Vishwadev Muraleedharan for the top 3 positions.

Aaron made it a double by winning Race 3 in the Rookie category from Varoon and Alexander. Amarnath narrowly clinched the first spot from Antony Peter with 3/100th of a second in yet another exciting Novice Race. The Open race witnessed an amazing comeback from Meka, who started last on the grid and eventually ended 2nd after Vivian Gladwin and just a tenth of a second ahead of Vishwadev!
