Indian Bikes Sales Figure December 2011

Hero MotoCorp: The world’s no. 1 two wheeler company has posted growth of 7.82% in the month of December 2011 compared to December 2010.  The company has sold 5,40,276 units of two wheeler in the month of December 2011 compared to 5,01,111  units of two wheeler sold in the month of December 2010. This is by far company’s highest ever sales for December till the date. On the month on month basis the sales is up by 0.65%. The company sold 5,36,772 units in the month of November 2011.  Hero Honda Pleasure is continuously crossing 35,000 units a month mark. The company has reported sales of 46,63,238 units for the period of April to December 2011 up by 18.12% compared to 39,47,983 units during the same period last year. The company sold record 6,117,599 units of two-wheelers in the period January-December 2011, a growth of 19.2% over the calendar year of 2010 when it had sold 5,134,549 two-wheelers.

Hero MotoCorp Senior Vice President (Marketing and Sales), Mr Anil Dua, commented  “The year 2011 has been extremely positive and eventful for the company. We donned a new brand identity this year and introduced the country’s first on-road, off-road bike Impulse, our first model to be launched under the new Hero brand name. Throughout the year, our sales performance has made consistent progress. We reached new milestones early this year with record sales and managed to keep it in excess of half a million units per month. Going forward, we intend to further consolidate our leadership position with new launches combined with focused communication and network expansion.”

The first nine months figure suggest that the company will easily achieve its 6 million units target. The company has launched three new products in Auto Expo 2012, Passion Xpro, Maestro & Ignitor under its new brand identity Hero. It also showcased its first hybrid concept scooter LEAP. The company is also looking for establishing fourth plant which will become operational by second half of financial year 2012-13. Beside this the company is looking to expand its present capacity of 6.15 million units to 7.0 million units.

Bajaj Auto

Country’s second largest two wheeler maker, Bajaj Auto has reported growth of 8.22% in the month of December 2011. The company has sold 2,63,699 units of motorcycle in the month of December 2011 compared to 2,43,675 units in the month of December 2010. This is by far company’s highest ever monthly sales for December month in company’s history. The company exported 1,19,708 units in the month of December 2011 up by 25.50% compared to 95,388 units in the month of December 2010.

On the month on month basis sales is down by 20.56%. The company sold 3,31,967 units in the month of November 2011. The company’s total sales stood at 3,05,690 units in the month of December 2011 up by 10.44% compared to 2,76,803 units in the month of December 2010. The company has sold 29,37,157 units of two wheeler during April to December 2011 period up by 15.17% compared to 25,50,372 units sold during the same period last year. Combined sales of brand Pulsar have crossed 5 million marks which is remarkable for Bajaj Auto.

The December month sales figure suggested that the company has flat sales for domestic market. There is also concern that the company will not achieve its 4.6 million unit target which was revised to 4.5 million units and now further revised to 4.4 million units. The company may achieve 20% growth in value terms but it would not achieve the same in volume front. The company still bullish for the year 2012 as its’ going to launch three new motorcycle, starting with Duke 200 on 24th January.

TVS Motors

TVS Motors has posted de growth of 0.27% in the month of December 2011. The company has sold 1,67,905 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 1,68,359 units sold in the month of December 2010. Total sales stood at 1,70,428 units in the month of December 2011 down by 0.79% compared to 1,71,790 units sold in the same period last year.  On the month on basis the company’s sales is down by 2.85%. The company sold 1,72,829 units of two wheeler in the month of November 2011.

Domestic sales stood at 1,46,747  units in the month of December 2011 down by  1.75% compared to 1,49,357 units sold in the month of December 2010. Export stood at 21,158 units in the month of December 2011 up by 11.35% compared to 19,002 units sold in December 2010. The company sold 44,804 units of scooter in the month of December 2011 up by 7.18% compared to 41,804 units of scooter sold in the month of December 2010.  Motorcycle sales stood at 56,662 units in the month of September 2011 down by 7.74% compared to 61,414 units sold in the month of December 2010. Moped sales stood at 66,439 units in the month of December 2011. The company has sold 16,37,993 units during April 2011 to December 2011 period up by 10.29% compared to 14,85,102 units in the same period last year.

“As a result of lower overall economic growth, high inflation, increased fuel prices and interest rates, we expect some moderation in the growth of two wheelers over the next three to six months. Hence we did not want to increase trade stocks. Consequently billing for the month is lower than our initial indication,” TVS Motor said in a statement.

TVS Motors motorcycle sale is stagnating now. The company is pushing well on moped front. The company is also bullish on export front and exploring new opportunities to expand its export market. The company has set goal of selling 2.4 million units in this financial year which it will miss considering only 3 months left to achieve the same.

HMSI

India’s largest scooter manufacturing company Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Ltd reported sales growth of 36.34% in the month of December 2011. The company reported sales of 1,91,854 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 1,40,719 units in the December 2010. On month on month basis the company’s sales is down by 3.68%. The company sold 1,99,154 units in the month of November 2011.

Motorcycle sale is up by 24.97% in the month of December 2011. The company sold 78,721 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 62,991 units in the month of December 2010. On the other hand Scooter sale is up by whopping 45.20%. The company sold 1,12,863 units of scooter in the month of December 2011 compared to 77,728 units in the month of December 2010. The company has sold 14,92,168 units during the April 2011 to December 2011 period up by 20.87% compared to 12,34,517 units sold in the same period last year.

HMSI is now gained number three position continuously for second month. As expected sales is increasing on the month on month basis now. Scooter number for HMSI has grown at the rate of 40-70% from couple of months which suggests continuous capacity expansion. The higher growth rate is also attributed to continuous strong performance in scooter segment. The company has started building its third plant in Narsapur Industrial area, 52 Km away from Banglore, Karnatak to expand it’s capacity to 4 million units by mid 2013. The company has planned 7 new products for India in 2012. The company unveiled its mass motorcycle Dream Yuga at Auto Expo 2012.

Yamaha India

Yamaha India has reported sales growth of 29.09% in the month of December 2011 compared to December 2010. Total sales stood at 44,976 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 34,839 units last year in the same period. Month on month basis the sales is up by 14.85%. The company sold 39,162 units in the November 2011. Domestic sales stood at 33,290 units in the month of December 2011 up by 24.88% compared to 26,657 units in the month of December 2010. Export stood at 11,686 units in the month of December 2011 up by 41.27% compared to 8,272 units in the month of December 2010. During April to December 2011 the company sold 3,62,410 units up by 31.56% compared to 2,74,689 units sold in the same period last year. For, the calendar year 2011 the company sol 4,60,815 units up by 31.93% compare to 3,50,274 units sold in the year 2010.

Commenting on the results, Mr. Jun Nakata, Director-Sales & Marketing, India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd., said, “We are very happy with the consistent sales growth that we’ve been witnessing this year. The new YZF-R15 Version 2.0 along with FZ & SZ series is driving our sales in both domestic and export markets. We plan to reach out to customers in tier II & tier III cities and are expanding our sales & service network in these regions. Our efforts towards enhancing our relationship with our esteemed customers through various initiatives like the Yamaha Safe Riding Science, R15 One Make Race Championships and the Sales & Service camps have also been very fruitful

The company has recently launched version 2.0 of its flagship motorcycle YZF-R15. The company is aiming to sell 5,00,000 units in this financial year with 3,50,000 units of domestic sales and 1,50,000 units of export. The company is also planning to launch scooter in this financial year. The company is also expanding its capacity to 10 lakh units in anticipation of better demand in upcoming years. The company also unveiled its scooter concept Ray at Auto Expo 2012.

Suzuki Motorcycles

Suzuki Motorcycle India did not report the figures for December 2011 month.  The company sold 25,837 units last year in December 2010. The company sold 1,97,433 units last year during the period of April to December 2010. Here is the updated numbers for October and November month.

November 2011: Suzuki Motorcycle India reported growth of 23.11% in the month of November 2011 compared to November 2010. The company’s total sales stood at 31,332 units in the month of November 2011 compared to 25,450 units in the month of November 2010. On month on month basis company’s sales is down by 171.77%. The company sold 11,529 units in the month of October 2011. The company sold 2,10,898 units during the period of April to November 2011 up by 22.90% compared to 1,71,596 units sold in the same period during the last year.

 October 2011: Suzuki Motorcycle reported de growth of 54.68% for the month of October 2011 due to ongoing strike at company’s plant. The company sold 11,529 units for the month of October 2011 compared to 25,439 units sold in the month of October 2011. On month on month basis company’s sales is down by 60.37%. The company sold 29,094 units in the month of September 2011. The company sold 1,79,566 units in during the period of April to October 2011 up by 22.86% compared to 1,46,157 units sold in the same period during the last year.

Mahindra Two wheelers

Two wheeler company Mahindra two wheeler reported de growth of 58.33% in the month of December 2011 compared to December 2010. Total sales stood at 6,231 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 14,971 units in the month of December 2010. Month on Month basis the company’s sales is down by 22.64%. The company sold 6,231 units last month. During the April to December 2011 period the company reported sales of 106,499 units down by 13.32% compared to sales of 1,22,859 units in the same month last year.

The company has reported massive de growth this month also in spite of dealer base expansion and promotional activities. This HMSI is clear indication that customers are moving from brand Mahindra. Moreover market leader has increased Activa production which is also taking some unit sales of Mahindra two wheelers. Going forward we will not see good growth figure if situation remains like this. The company is now looking to re launch its motorcycle Stallio for volume growth.

Summary

The Indian two wheeler industry’s growth finally started showing slow down in the month of December after fantastic November month sales.  The December 2011 month has seen sales of more than 1.23 million units up by 9.70% compared to 1.13 million units sold in December 2010. The period April 2011 to December 2011 has witnessed growth of 16.52% over the same period last year. More than 11.43 million units of two wheelers sold during the period of April 2011 to December 2011 compared to 9.81 million units in the same period last year.

Hero Moto Corp the market leader is continuously posting double digit growth with robust sales each month. It has done 4.66 million units sales in the current financial year. Bajaj Auto the second largest manufacturer of two wheelers has sold over 2.93 million units in the current financial year.

TVS Motors has sold more than 1.64 million units whereas HMSI sales stood at 1.49 million units during April 2011 to December 2011 period. Yamaha India, Suzuki Motorcycle and Mahindra two wheelers sold 0.36 million, 0.25 million and 0.11 million units respectively during the period of April 2011 to December 2011. It seems that the industry may grow at double digit but the growth rate will be around 10-12% for the rest of the financial year.
