Mahindra Two Wheelers sold a total of 11,178 two-wheelers in the Indian market in August this year while the company’s exports for the month stood at 1,420 units. Viren Popli, Chief of Operations, Mahindra Two Wheelers, said that the company has enhanced its portfolio and have launched the new Centuro Rockstar motorcycle as well as the Rodeo UZO 125 scooter. Both these products have been launched nationwide, however, as per Popli, they would be available at all the 1,400 sales and service outlets in the coming months. Mahindra’s commuter motorcycle, the Centuro, is selling in good numbers and the company recently launched a stripped-down variant of the bike too, called the Centuro Rockstar. This is the cheapest Centuro that you can buy right now and features a flip-key, six Pilot LEDs, LED brake light, aircraft style fuel cap, pass switch, alloy wheels, electric-start and a maintenance-free VRLA battery. Costing Rs 43,684 (ex-showroom, Delhi), the new Rockstar Centuro does make for an interesting proposition. It also comes with Mahindra's standard five-year warranty for that ‘peace of mind’ while the ARAI certified fuel-efficiency figure of 85.4 km/l is the proverbial cherry-on-cake. The Rodeo UZO 125 on the other hand is Mahindra’s attempt to freshen up the ageing scooter in the face of stiff competition, primarily from Honda’s Activa 125 and Suzuki’s Access 125. A few racing stripes, coloured wheels, and body coloured rear view mirrors do actually make the scooter look up-to-date! But Mahindra is forgetting that the game has moved on… ! That being said, the scoot still remains a worthy candidate with proven mechanicals and suspension, and you also get thoughtful touches like under seat storage illumination, side-stand buzzer, 4-in-1 anti-theft key, and a mobile charging point, among others. In comparison to the 13,659 units of July 2014, sales for August 2014 have actually declined. Mahindra certainly is putting all their energy and are taking fairly decent strides. But it certainly needs to expand its portfolio now rather than adding just adding variants with cosmetic changes every now and then.
