Bajaj Eyes 25% Market Share In Bikes This Year

Motorcycle major Bajaj Auto is eyeing a 25 percent market share in the middle segment by the end of this fiscal, a top company executive said Thursday. “Currently we have 22 percent market share in commuter deluxe segment, which is the middle segment of the motorcycle industry.

Our market share in this segment grew by 8 percent in FY09 to 22 percent in FY11. We are eyeing 25 percent market share in this segment by the end of FY12,” S. Sridhar, president, motorcycle business, Bajaj Auto, said after launching the new ‘Discover 125cc motorcycle in Kolkata.

“We are now number two in commuter deluxe segment. We want to be a motorcycle specialist in the Indian market. Next two years are very crucial for every player in the market,” he said. He said the company currently possessed 50 percent market share in top segment, which is the sports segment, and 30 percent market share in the entry-level segment. Sridhar said the company will re-launch its ‘Boxer’ bike with modified features within the next five-six months.

“Our bottom segment (entry-level segment) will grow after we re-introduce ‘Boxer’. It will be the bike of more than 100cc. The price range will be Rs.38,000-40,000,” he added.
