The R2 will be pitted against KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR in the fully-faired motorcycle segment in the Indian market
Yamaha India is all set to launch the R2 sportsbike on August 27, 2026 in the Indian market. However, prior to the official debut, the pre-bookings for the fully-faired motorcycle have begun on the brand’s official website at a token amount of Rs 10,000 which is fully refundable. In Nov 2025, during the launch of the XSR155, the Japanese automaker had confirmed the introduction of 10 all-new models in India by the end of 2026. A month later in Dec 2025, Yamaha filed the trademark for the ‘YZF-R2’ moniker in our country.
Yamaha R2 is likely to become the company’s flagship motorcycle as the R3 has already been phased out from the domestic market in India. Likely to be sold alongside the R15 in India, it will be up against the likes of KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR. Internally codenamed as 070, the R2 could be priced between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.20 lakh (ex-showroom) in the Indian market.
The new fully-faired sportsbike is going to be a global 200cc motorcycle which will be designed, developed and manufactured entirely in India. Needless to mention, the made-in-India model will be exported to several global markets as the brand’s Chennai factory will serve as global production hub for the R2. The local production will ensure an aggressive price.
The R2 is expected to be pretty identical to the other Yamaha superports motorcycles in terms of styling and appearance. Alongside a muscular fairing, it could carry several premium styling elements such as a twin headlamp setup, LED DRLs, sculpted fuel tank, upswept exhaust pipe and split seat setup. Yamaha R2 is likely to offer a committed riding position.
Since the R2 is a premium motorcycle, we can expect the sportsbike to come with advanced connectivity and safety features. It could get a fully-coloured TFT instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation. The YZF-R2 might also be offered with multiple ride modes, quickshifter, USB charging slot, dual-channel ABS, assist and slipper clutch and traction control system.
Yamaha could use 17-inch front and rear wheels as standard with the R2. It could also boast of USD front forks and monoshock rear suspension. At the heart, there could be a bigger version of the existing 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. The 155cc engine, available with the R15, develops top power of 18.1 bhp and peak torque of 14.2 Nm. It is certain that the R2’s engine will develop higher power and torque as it will be positioned above the R15.
