All-New Bajaj Electric Motorcycle Launch by FY28 in India

The upcoming Bajaj electric motorcycle will be initially exported to global markets from the brand’s Pune facility in India

Bajaj Auto has confirmed that its first mass-market electric motorcycle will be launched in the Indian market by FY28. Presently, Royal Enfield is the only mainstream legacy brand to have an electric bike portfolio in India while several others such as Hero MotoCorp and TVS are working on such models which are likely to go on sale around the same time as the Bajaj electric motorcycle. Some of the prominent companies present in the e-motorcycle segment are Ultraviolette Automotive, Revolt Motors, Oben Electric, and Matter.

“Development of our electric motorcycle is well underway, with product work progressing steadily. We anticipate a launch around FY28, provided all goes to plan. Our initial focus will be on export markets, followed by the domestic,” said Dinesh Thapar, Chief Financial Officer, Bajaj Auto, during a post-earnings call. The company is also looking to refresh its 125-160cc motorcycle line-up in the coming months.

The Pune-based two-wheeler brand stated that it has elaborate plans to widen the EV portfolio which comprises of electric scooters, electric three-wheelers, e-rickshaws and, eventually, electric motorcycles. One of the primary reasons behind the introduction of e-motorcycle is the Delhi EV Policy 2026 which has banned new registrations of petrol and CNG two-wheelers from April 1, 2028.

In order to facilitate the smooth roll out of new electric scooters and motorcycle, Bajaj Auto is also expanding the overall manufacturing capacity by around 20 percent. While the initial 10 percent expansion will be carried out in the coming 3-4 months, the remaining 10 percent capacity expansion will take place by the end of the financial year or during Q1 FY28.

The Chetak electric scooter posted sales of 1.30 lakh units in the first quarter of the ongoing finanical year. Hence, the company is looking to increase the production from 50,000 units to 60,000 units due to the overwhelming demand and rising waiting period. “We’re now expanding capacities… to be able to really cater to the upswing in demand,” Thapar added.

As stated earlier too, apart from the all-electric motorcycle, Bajaj will launch the updated models of its Pulsar line-up in the 125-160cc segment. “The growth has continued to be led by the 125+ cc segments, which is growing well at almost double that of the overall market,” concluded Thapar. So, expect a flurry of new launches from the brand in the next few months.
