The’YZF-R2′ moniker was trademarked in the Indian market in Dec 2025, hinting at a possible launch in the coming months
Yamaha R2 could finally launch on Aug 27, 2026 in the Indian market. The company has sent us a ‘Block Your Date’ media invite for the same and we believe it is going to be the keenly-awaited superbike. The R2 is likely to become Yamaha’s flagship motorcycle as the R3 has already been phased out from the domestic market in India. In Nov 2025, during the launch of the XSR155, the Japanese brand had confirmed the introduction of 10 all-new models in India by the end of 2026. A month later in Dec 2025, the ‘YZF-R2’ moniker was trademarked in our country, hinting at a possible launch.
To be sold alongside the R15 in India, Yamaha R2 will be up against the likes of KTM RC200 and Hero Karizma XMR. The new fully-faired sportsbike is going to be a global 200cc motorcycle which will be designed, developed and manufactured entirely in India. Needless to mention, the made-in-India model will be exported to several global markets as the brand’s Chennai factory serves as global production hub for the bike.
It could be priced between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.20 lakh (ex-showroom) in the Indian market. The local production will ensure an aggressive price as the R2 will be sold alongside the R15, which contrary to earlier reports, will not be discontinued from the Indian market. Internally codenamed as 070, Yamaha R2 is expected to be pretty identical to the other superports motorcycle in the Japanese brand’s portfolio.

Flaunting a muscular fairing, Yamaha R2 will carry several premium styling elements, including a twin headlamp setup, LED DRLs, sculpted fuel tank, upswept exhaust pipe and split seats. It will have a committed riding position. Yamaha is likely to equip the sportsbike with advanced connectivity and safety features. It could get a fully-coloured TFT instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity and navigation.
The YZF-R2 might also be offered with multiple ride modes, quickshifter, USB charging slot, dual-channel ABS, assist and slipper clutch and traction control system. Riding on 17-inch front and rear wheels, it could get USD front forks and monoshock rear suspension. At the heart, it could house a bigger version of the existing 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine.

Presently, this engine develops top power of 18.1 bhp and peak torque of 14.2 Nm. It is certain that the R2’s engine will develop higher power and torque as it will be positioned above the R15 in Yamaha’s portfolio in India. The debut of a 200cc engine in the R2 will also ensure decent mileage. In the coming days, we can expect multiple teasers of the upcoming Yamaha R2 on the brand’s social media pages ahead of its official launch in India.
