The electric two-wheelers accounted for 9.25 percent of total segment retail sales in May 2026
The Indian two-wheeler industry is on a roll as overall sales touched 18.44 lakh units in May 2026 with a YoY growth of 7.5 percent. The faster adoption of EVs is one of the foremost reasons behind this growth. A total of 17.15 lakh two-wheelers were sold in May 2025. However, the retail volumes declined on a MoM basis by 7.2 percent as 19.87 lakh units were sold in Apr 2026. The two-wheeler segment accounted for nearly 73 percent of the total vehicles sold in May 2026 (25.31 lakh), stated the sales data of FADA.
According to the data shared by Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the rural markets continued to outnumber the urban pockets with share of 58.5 percent in total two-wheeler sales. On the other hand, the urban circuits had a share of 41.5 percent in May 2026 which increased marginally from 41.3 percent in Apr 2026.
The rising petrol prices has a massive impact on buyers as electric two-wheelers accounted for 9.25 percent of total segment retail sales in May 2026. For reference, the EVs had a market share of 6.11 percent in total two-wheeler sales during the same month last year. In Apr 2026, the electric two-wheelers accounted for 7.92 percent of total sales.

The electric two-wheeler industry in India registered YoY growth of 63 percent in May 2026 with around 1.71 lakh units sold as compared to 1.05 lakh units sold during the same month last year. The e2w industry also grew on a MoM basis as 1.57 lakh units were sold in April 2026. The two-wheeler segment accounted for 63 percent of the overall EV sales in May 2026.
TVS contined to lead the electric two-wheeler segment with 64 percent YoY growth as sales increased from 25,804 units in May 2025 to 42,415 units in May 2026. The Hosur-based two-wheeler brand continued to maintain its market share of 25 percent. Bajaj Auto sold 39,142 Chetak scooters in May 2026 with a YoY growth of 73 percent. The brand had retailed 22,643 units in May 2025. It held on to its market share of 23 percent in the electric two-wheeler segment.

Ather Energy doubled its YoY sales in May 2026 in the domestic market. The retail volumes increased 28,211 units last month as compared to 14,101 units sold during May 2025. Hero’s electric arm Vida sold 19,051 units electric scooters in May 2026 with a YoY growth of nearly 166 percent as the company had retailed 7,385 units in May 2025. Ola Electric sold 15,141 units in May 2026 with a de-growth of 20 percent as the brand had retailed 18,967 units in May 2025.
