Bajaj Auto will launch its fifth model in the 125cc segment of motorcycles after the Pulsar 125, Pulsar NS125, Pulsar N125 and Freedom (CNG).
Bajaj Auto will launch an all-new 125cc motorcycle in the Indian market. Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto confirmed this development in an investors call and during an interaction with CNBC-TV18. The new entry-level 125cc bike will be launched in the next 6-9 months in India. In addition, it has been learnt that Bajaj is also working on a 160cc model, which will go on sale after the debut of the 125cc motorcycle. Just so you know, the Pune-based two-wheeler brand already has four bikes in the 125cc segment: Pulsar 125, Pulsar NS125, Pulsar N125 and Freedom (CNG).
“Now whether there is space for one more brand beside Pulsar will be based on careful analysis of how distinct these sub-segments are. This work is going on and we will conclude this and reveal it to you closer to the time when we launch the product,” said Sharma during the investors call.
Bajaj recently pulled the plug on the CT125X and hence the possibilities of a potential comeback by this commuter bike with modern features and styling upgrades can’t be ruled out either. It is also being speculated that the company might revive the ‘Discover’ nameplate and launch the upcoming 125cc motorcycle under this moniker.
Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto said during the earnings call, ”So that question is still open. As the product sort of acquires its specs and its full form, we will decide on the branding. I can say that the 125cc segment, in particular, not the 125cc+, the 125cc segment is almost equal to the executive 100cc segment, which is like 28 percent of the Indian motorcycle industry is just the 125cc segment.”
Presently, the sales of the 125cc segment has reached equivalent to the 100cc slab, which accounts for 28 percent of total motorcycle sales. Hence, Bajaj is keen to expand its portfolio in this segment and further consolidate its position in the Indian market. The four different 125cc Bajaj bikes are priced in a range of Rs 85,178 – 1.11 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
“And we can see two or three sub-segments emerging over here. Freedom is, of course, an innovation, though it’s a 125cc, but it cuts across different cc classes and is the proposition for the long-distance rider who is very keen to save money because of long-distance riding,” concluded Sharma.
