Over 200 Indian Motorcycles Sold So Far in India; 60% Market Share in 20 Lakh+ Segment

Indian Motorcycle – the oldest American motorcycle manufacturer, now in the hands of Polaris, officially launched their products in India back in January last year. They play in the over-1600 cc segment which back then sold only 26 motorcycles during the complete financial year of 2013-14! Last year, their managing director Pankaj Dubey iterated that they had plans to sell about 20 to 30 units for the complete fiscal.

And during an interaction with him at the launch of new Roadmaster and Dark Horse on 7th May, he informed us that they have sold 200+ motorcycles till now which is a commendable achievement. We are talking about a brand which sells motorcycles costing between 25 to 40 Lakhs and their most affordable offering, Scout also goes for about 12 Lakhs ex-showroom. And they have officially launched only two dealerships yet!

They claim that they have a 60 percent plus market share in the 20 lakh plus motorcycle segment. Very recently they started sales of their Dark Horse and new flagship Roadmaster which takes the total tally of offerings to six motorcycles in all. At the inauguration of their new Bengaluru dealership, they also handed over keys to their first Dark Horse customer!

Indian Motorcycle have large expansion plans with more new dealerships coming up across the nation and the pace at which they are going, it seems they will have to re-consider their targets and increase them manifold! Very recently, we undertook the Great Indian Roadtrip from Mumbai to Delhi on Chief Vintage and Chieftain and were mesmerized by what the motorcycles had to offer! A detailed travelogue will be posted soon…
