Led By Shine 100 Honda All Set to Beat TVS in 100-110cc Motorcycle Segment

A quick look at 100cc motorcycle sales for this financial year (Apr-Dec 2023-24) reveals interesting trends with Honda inching extremely close to TVS…

After global stalwarts like Suzuki and Yamaha quit the entry level motorcycle segment, we only have the local biggies vying up for a pie each – with Hero’s erstwhile partner Honda being the only non-Indian maker – trying desperately to make a mark here.

This is Hero’s territory and it is because of this segment that the Gurgaon based maker is the world’s largest player in terms of volumes. It must also be noted that this 100-110cc is the only segment where Hero rules (by a massive margin). The 125cc motorcycle segment, where Hero used to be the biggest player once, has slipped out of its hand and it is, in fact, now placed third – with TVS – the fourth placed maker – inching close very fast.

Honda has been a maker that has been vocal about its rivalry with Hero and has big intents of piercing into the stronghold 100cc motorcycle segment. After trying out multiple motorcycles, Honda thought of shooting its biggest bet – by bringing the immensely popular Shine moniker in the 100cc space – and the Shine 100 was born.

We rode the commuter motorcycle last year and came out fairly impressed with what was on offer – and at a very attractive price tag. Honda has been running out special campaigns and promoting the motorcycle aggressively and the results are pouring in. In the first nine months of this financial year (April to December 2023), Honda has managed to increase its sales in this segment by almost 1.10 Lakh units which is a phenomenal growth of 75 percent over the same period last year.

Hero has brought back its Passion to face the onslaught from the competition..

Though it is still the last placed maker in this list, but it has inched very close to TVS and if it can sustain the momentum, it will definitely end up snatching the position. Here are the 100-110cc motorcycle sales for this fiscal..

Quick Pointers

  • Quite clearly, Honda is growing at the fastest pace in this segment and after the final three months of this fiscal, it may end up beating TVS for the third spot.
  • After having a great run, Bajaj seems to be slowing down – and it is the only maker to have witnessed a fall here.
  • It is commendable on Hero’s part to have growth at such a massive base. It grew by 1.65 Lac units – higher than combined sales of Honda in the Apr-Dec 2022 period.
  • TVS also had a fairly decent year and it grew by almost 10 percent. However, Honda is just 16,000 odd units away from it. If it has to save its position, it will have to come up with some excitement for entry level buyers.

It is Honda’s Shine 100 that has taken up the baton and is doing majority of sales for the company in this motorcycle segment. A quick glance at the numbers tells us that this motorcycle has been averaging roughly 30,000 units in the last few months, with the remaining tally coming from the CD110 and a few thousand from the premium Livo.
