Hi Hari , This deadly practice of sudden braking by engine by lowering the gears will ruin the engine beyond repairs. never ever do this, it may put huge amount of stress on the engine.

Chinmay,

One doubt. One of the guys in TVS who does the test-drives/testing for bikes says that he uses to quickly down shift gears and exercise the engine braking etc,. In fact i have seen him drive at 80-100 etc,. and quickly slow down to zero within a very short distance by quickly lowering the gears. Would that not ruin the gears. What exactly is engine braking by downshifting ? Can you please explain.

thanks

Great article buddy. Thanks for your time to write this article. I would likt to add my 2 cents to your million dollar article. There is another misconception among many bikers that it is not safe to use the front brakes at any time. This is very wrong. Infact 60% of the stopping power is in the front brakes only. So not using them will result in improper braking. Like Chinmay stresses it is essential to use both brakes simultaneously and to the right extent. It is all muscle memory. Practice until ir moves from your mind to your hands and feet.
