Motorcycle Helmet – Choosing The Right One

by Deepak on January 2, 2009

Having the proper safety equipment is very important when you are operating or riding on a motorcycle. Even though I have blogged about motorcycling safety in the past, it does not hurt to repeat it from time to time because the topic is of utmost importance in a biker’s lifestyle. In this article I have given the tips to help you choose the right Helmet.

While a helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment, it will only protect you if it the right type of helmet and it fits properly. Have you ever seen a young child riding on a motorcycle wearing an adult size helmet? In the event of an accident, the helmet would offer no protection to the child’s skull at all.

It is very important that you try on any motorcycle helmet to ensure a proper fit. If you decide to make a purchase over the internet or from a catalog, make sure you are able to return it for a refund if it doesn’t fit well. Keep in mind that each manufacturer sizes their helmets differently. Just because you currently own a size large doesn’t mean that is what you will wear in a different brand. For best results through the mail or internet, measure the circumference of your head and ask them to give you the helmet dimensions. Never purchase a used motorcycle helmet because it may have been involved in an accident and it won’t protect you as it was designed to.

For the best results, try on motorcycle helmets with any accessories you will generally have while riding. For example, many women like to have their hair in a ponytail but may have it straight while trying on a helmet. If you wear prescription glasses while operating your motorcycle, then make sure you take them with you when you are trying on helmets.

A motorcycle helmet needs to fit very securely. Make sure it surrounds your entire head. The chin straps are adjustable but put them in place to ensure you can get them tight enough to fit your face shape. You should also try on the same brand of helmet in one size larger and one size smaller just to make sure you do in fact have the best fitting helmet for your head. For added comfort, consider getting a motorcycle helmet that offers air vents. You can easily slide them opened or closed to allow more air to circulate while wearing it.

You will find motorcycle helmets made from a variety of materials. For the best in safety and quality, choose one that is made from organic fiberglass and layers of carbon fibers. This combination creates a very powerful shock absorbent shell. You also want to make sure the liner features a three layer system. This will offer you additional shock absorption.

If you plan to ride your motorcycle a great deal, consider getting a motorcycle helmet that allows you to easily change the visor. This is a great option for riding during the day and the night. Make sure the visors are fog resistant and offer impact resistance.

Investing in a quality helmet that offers the protection you need while riding a motorcycle isn’t going to be cheap, but it may well be one of the most important investments you make in your life. Statistics show that motorcycle riders who wear a helmet have a 35% less chance of suffering from a head injury. You can fit a helmet that fits well and even have it custom painted to match your motorcycle.

Wish You A Safe Ride,
Deepak

my friend met with an accident two months b4 when he was riding a bike without a helmet , he had a blood clotting in his head which was removed after a major operation ,he was very lucky to escape from his death .. this is a excption case i have heard many people died , gone under como stage , brain death after head injury….
So people should wear helmet ,( ISI marked and a quality one )
stop rash driving , obey the traffic rules , dont drink and drive.
Every one should ride within their limits …

SPEED THRILLS BUT KILLS
OVERTAKE IN YOU LIFE challenges NOT in busy roads
dont drink and drive

i think VEGA helmets are better designed and of less weight try one get safe … your dear ones are waiting for you

I like the advice given above.I got a helmet from Wrangler..I think it is a good one. Will I be able to get an anti-glare visor for my helmet?
As written in one of those comments even one of my freinds met with an accident but he did not have a helmet..but by God’s grace they escaped unhurt..

well.. i use a Ninja helmet from Studs.
ive tried on many different helmets from different companies and different models from the same company.. i think ninja helmet is undoubtedly the best in the business.
it has a very firm fitting, yet tight so that the helmet does not run loose on a collision.
I had an accident about 1.5 years ago.. though it wasnt a major one.. one, but i think my helmet saved my lovely head and not to mention my face when i rammed into a bike perpendicularly.. my scooty and his bike got jammed and we both were thrown ahead of our vehicles.. he landed on the road and i landed on a car’s hood. (bonnet). since i was thrown ahead of my scooty.. my head had the first impact.. luckily i stood hardly with minor bruises to my arm.. my head was unhurt.. and my helmet just took a scratch
:)

after that i stopped rash driving.. lol :P

some lessons are learnt after a mistake.. yet “prevention is better than cure” isnt it?

Good that you got out of it without paying a high price for your mistake. And by the way, you are doing good in the contest too… I guess you will get yourself a nice pair of gloves… keep it up!

Helmets are very important. I have seen many people stop on the roads to buy helmets, but a helmet is useless if its not the right one. Good article Deepak on the helmets. I am sure it will be quite useful to new bike riders.

absolutely…a good helmet is the first step for safe biking…
i have tried vega helmet, which is good but a bit tight…while my current helmet…studds ninja black is doing good service to me…
my vega helmet was tested for impact once, due to a careless mistake by me…i was riding at slow speeds…and road repair work was going on…and so .. a part of newly tarred road was elevated…and the old one was a bit below level…and i was trying to move to the elevated road…though the elevation was not much high…but i was too close to it and couldn’t move the bike up …and slipped…and i fell …and grazed my jaw…i mean grazed helmet’s jaw..thank god i was wearing full face helmet…and on other occasions…(oil slipping) helmet has served me well…
friends wear helmet for short distances as usually we become careless thinking its short distance and end up making mistakes..
and also one important thing…
a helmet for pillion riders should be recommended…if ur girl friend is not comfortable with full face one….at least give her half face one..

@ the last statement by sankoobaba
guys, girls often tend to avoid wearing a helmet since it messes up their hair and stuff like that..

its a seriously bad idea to let them ride without a safety equipment on.. i think a few messed up hair are better than a crude scar on the face…
Think about it !!

@daksh..
i agree with you..thats the excuse they give…i got the same response… and used the same reasoning that you gave and with reluctance they agreed…
and you know what I see more girls not wearing helmets..than guys…
what say???
all the girls wear is their dupatta tied like a terrorists…most of them dont wear helmet…i agree they ride their scooters slowly…
but still….

daksh January 7, 2009 at 7:29 pm

@ koobaba :D

yea.. girls often tell guys to wear helmets..
and they themselves dont wear ‘it’.
yea, Driving scooters slow is a good thing that they doo.. but hey, the person driving a car/bike next to you isnt as descent as u are..
theres only one rule to drive on the raods..
think as if the other drivers are “CRAZY and INSANE” and u have to make it through the traffic safe and the other people shud also be safe..
only then it is that u can actually come out unharmed.

@daksh
i agree with you,
we should expect others to make mistakes,
we should expect others to ride crazily,
so drive/ride as if everybody is out to kill you,
that is the only way to survive….
ride safe people..
always stay alert!!
and please wear helmet, and dont remove rear view mirrors..
i see some people remove rear view mirrors…especially in small towns..it is risky to ride without them..

daksh January 8, 2009 at 1:20 pm

@koobaba (again :o )

yea, people in small towns usually tend to remove the rear view mirrors or they either bend it in such a way that the mirror faces the tank heads down..
i dont know why they do it.. its looks crazy and the bike’s look is damaged.
besides the looks and stuff.. they risk their own lives by not abstrating the rear view of the traffic.. (which u obviously need to see if your gonna drive in one hell of a traffic zone)

I always wear a helmet while riding.I have a red and black Ninja studds helmet which can be used as a full face and a half one too.I think pillion riders should wear a helmet too.Once my friend was driving and I was sitting behind,it was late at night and there was a junction ahead,To our great horror a pulsar rammed the activa at nearly 60-70km/hr from the side, the pillion rider sitting on the pulsar flew and was thrown on the road,as my friend was driving at 30km/hr we escaped with minor injuries!

I like your article. Many people go for cheap helmets and use it only to save fine from police. They never realize that it is for their safety. Even my pillion also uses full face helmet.
I use Vega Boolean which offers excellent protection but the only problem is that it’s heavy and painful in log ride. Can you suggest any lightweight and full face helmet that has all the features that Vega Boolean has?

I use a vega helmet brought for 825/- in chennai. My friend brought a cheap helmet for 150/-. He just laughed at me as i am wasting money. the same way people buy cheap duplicate battery for their company cell phones for 100rs. They make fun of me for me buying original battery for 500/-. These kind of people disgust me.

I like to say don’t listen to this kind of people who behave like they are very cleverer then us. Company helmets are costly but they are durable. Don’t break easy when met with an accident. Buy helmates from good brands and wish you a safe riding.
